for some reason, i feel it's a good day when grown men can discuss and debate the intricacies of tucking vs not tucking a button down shirt.

Amen. In High School leaving it untucked violated the dress code,so we rebels spat in the face of authority by leaving them untucked. But now that its OK, and even fashionable, its no fun.

Also I think you younger guys pull it off better. Like a few days' beard growth-- a young guy looks stylish, an old guy looks like a drunk.

Perhaps it's the drink that caused the beer belly that is being poorly hid?

I'm not sure it's an age thing so much as a fit thing. It's a decent look on anyone who is relatively trim and has a shirt that fits well. Unfortunately, on most guys, it's essentially a combover with buttons.
