I’m interested in this coat as well, but should I go true to size or downsize one size?
I own both the navy donegal and the taupe herringbone flecked wool raglan from the current season and sized down one in both of them, as advised by Drake's. I'm happy with the fit and though tts didn't look 'bad', it was too big for my taste. However, shoulders run surprisingly narrow in my opinion, so if you're into weightlifting or naturally very broad-shouldered, you might want to consider going tts.

(They advise to size down "For a closer fit".)
I could only try the TTS (= same as my winter chores, one size up from my linen chores) taupe one, and while during the first seconds I tough it would be too big, after a few minutes and letting the fabric drape it actually felt good.
It's intended to fit big—but it's up to what you prefer.

True, they only advise to size down for a closer fit. However, the linen chores also run relatively big and they don't advise to size down for those so I guess they know the raglan coats run quite big by most people's standards? Or it's just their usual inconsistencies when it comes to measurements and sizing. I totally agree it comes down to personal preference, going tts or sizing down will both work just fine.

Given that there is some overlap, just wanted to mention I've created a Bryceland's appreciation thread.

This look is one of the reasons I want to buy an ecru/off-white chore jacket.

Now come my problems:
1. I don't know which size fits me. I have the chasseur jacket in a 38, which fits well, but is actually a bit short in the sleeves. Should I take a 40 in a chore jacket? I am 6'2 and rather slim.

2. I would be interested to know how warm and robust the different fabrics are. I'm looking at Selvedge denim, waxed Herringbone cotton and cotton Duck Canvas at the moment. What are your experiences if you own the jackets in the corresponding material? What temperatures are they suitable for, especially if you wear a jumper underneath?

Thank you in advance!

I have the cotton duck version; I like the relative stiffness and structure of the material compared to the other perennial materials that Drake's uses for chore jackets. I chose the cotton-canvas over the selvedge denim. Regardless of the material, the ecru is generally one of the more striking chores available, I think. This limits its versatility, but it looks really sharp with the right outfit, as in the photo you posted above.

Like most of the other chores, it's not especially warm. I'd wear it with a jumper if the temperature was relatively mild; I don't think any of the Drake's chores in cotton or canvas are suitable for very cold weather, even with thick knitwear. I'd wear it in autumn and spring and switch to something woolen and lined for true winter weather.

As for sizing, I also have the chasseur, and sized down one from my chore size. If I were you I'd probably go with a 40.

What does the thread have to do with Faulkner, other than his coat?

Thanks. Shirt is from LEJ. Jeans from Rubato and shoes La Botte Gardiane Camille.
For the Rubato, did you choose true to size? I just returned a Rubato denim myself, as mine didn’t look as good on me as they do on you. Maybe I ordered one size too large. Does the denim shrink as time moves on?

At least my pair in ecru has not shrunk in about 5-7 washes in 40C. The stretch is also quite minimal so I suggest to go tts. The front pockets are super shallow and completely useless…

Agree with both points. I went with TTS. And the pockets are indeed shallow. In general, I find pockets on a lot of MIJ jeans to be too shallow. Drake’s five pocket trousers don’t have this problem.

Oh, I’ve been curious about the Rubato black denim. People say it’s not that high-rise at all. Would you agree?

Perhaps right down the middle? Medium rise? I have had higher and I’ve had lower rises in jeans from different brands. I don’t find the rise on Rubato to be meaningfully different from the one Drake’s pair that I own (the ecru one).

That picture is one I’ve used for fit inspiration and to try to dial in fit. To me, the model consistently wears his chores bigger than tts… sometimes even over a blazer. Part of this is evident by the shoulder seems and rolled cuffs compared to how I wear mine (tts 38).

For materials, I have the selvidge cord and the heavy cotton twill (in ecru, with the cord collar). The heavy twill is noticeably heavier (duh). So much so that I wouldn’t wear in warm weather. The cord is more lightweight… for more mild weather. I while the measurements seem similar, I have problems, esp in the arms, when wearing both a shirt and sweater under the cord version… where I seem to be able to layer more easily with the twill.

As far sizing, my guess is that the model is shorter than you and the length will end up shorter. In trying to replicate this fit I recently sized up to a 40 (that St. John’s chore I posted about). I found that too big, even with my thickest sweater… this being in the chest. Sleeves and length were manageable.

Given you are 6’2” and slim (I’m 6’ and slim), I would think a 40 might be big on you in the chest… unless you really want to wear it oversized and with layers. But it’s probably what you need in the sleeve, and closer to the fit in the pic.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
