I'm not affiliated with Vass or Massdrop, so this is pure speculation. According to the most recent price sheet, if these boots were ready-to-wear from the shop, they'd be 155,000 HUF ~ 560 EUR including 27% Hungarian VAT. Including shoe trees, that's 590 EUR with VAT. Excluding VAT and converting to USD at market rate, that's about 512 USD.

They'd cost more if they were MTO, but with 20 committed orders, eh, 495 USD doesn't seem that suspiciously low...

Massdrop is obviously not taking the typical retailer cut. Pricing has been discussed many times before. I have no problem with a retailer's markup to handle all of the issues, costs, etc. to stock a full line of shoes. Sale prices usually aren't that far off, and we do get some unique designs. I wish there were more retailers (won't be with deals like this), but Vass must be doing well with its current policies.

Comparing to the RTW price sheet, $495 doesn't seem that low, but you're lucky to find a boot stocked in your size in the Vass shop. There is almost always the MTO and shipping charge/potential customs to add.

Crazy how different the same pair of shoes can look depending on the lighting. That brogue wing by the laces is a nice touch, didn't know that was an option

Mass drop aims to get the best price for customers with a minimum quantity to hit. They aren't looking to get huge margins. They are looking to get some margin but pass along a deal to folks interested. It's a great community and I've made a few purchases there and will continue to support them

Offer me a quality product at a reasonable price & I'll be there when I'm in the market...I look forward to seeing what they might offer in the future...and hope they don't screw me again next time around (although I do understand the reasons).

I assume part of the upcharge is for all the service you're getting, including being able to return the shoes if they don't work out.

IMO, for first time Vass customers, it's very useful to have that return option, since Vass shoes aren't always sized consistently. I take a 42 in the P2 lasted Alt Wien, but have to size down to a 41.5 in the P2 lasted Theresianer. Same last, but different sizes.

Thanks Pepper! You were the main enabler for me to try Vass hahaha. It's just burgundy calf, F last, old english 2 with rubber taps. Extra burnish on the toes.
