Yeah mine had a scar from the original leather that was used on the vamp. One would think this piece would be used somewhere else on the shoe to make sure that the scar is hidden from view, but this particular imperfection was out right on the vamp in plain view. Strange choice, and I really love these shoes too which hurts the most.

In regard to the AE thread, if I pay Vass price I expect Vass quality and attention to detail. I have AE seconds that's are in better shape then the Vass firsts I received from this transaction. The price difference just can't be justified and I will likely put a pair of Vass shoes under much closer inspection then a pair of AE seconds that cost me 1/6th of the price. Just my .02, please take it or leave it.

Nothing that I could find. The stitching at the back of the shoe was something I could deal with, but it was a touch crooked. The main concern was the scar.

The most important consideration is how you feel about your shoes. It appeared at first that you were ready to live with shoe as is, but when you put it under the perfect scrutiny of the forum, you decided to return it. If you do not like your shoes regardless of price paid, do return them and do not wait for others to validate that decision. What you see as a flaw can be no big deal to another guy.

Interesting that people have a problem with an indent on the vamp. . . A place that will have creases once worn anyway. Also, superficial scratches will erase themselves after a wear or two.

I actually couldn't find the flaw on my phone, and I'm picky. I would have asked for a discount, assuming they were shell, and just let the vamp crease naturally.

I dont think its entirely clear from the pictures if the dent is just superficial. if OP has has waited two months for a perfect pair, he might find it perfectly worthwhile to wait a couple more months for those to be remade.

I totally agree. If you're not happy send them back. I have no idea how I'd feel, but the pictures didn't look bad. The disappointment is totally understandable.

Pretty sure those shoes are going back. That scar would bug the hell out of me if they were mine, and as mentioned, handmade $700 US (or whatever) shoes ought to be better than AE seconds.

I realize it's tedious, but can some people with experience suggest a good starting point for Vass F last sizing?

I measure between 7.5 and 7.75 on the Brannock, and I definitely have a narrow foot (even more so the heel than the forefoot).

I wear a 7.5 length in all the normal fitting Alden lasts (Hampton, Aberdeen, Leydon, etc) and could probably take a B width, though I haven't tried. I get a nice fit from the Hampton in 7.5C when I wear thick socks.

I'm a UK 6.5E in the C&J 325, though I can again wear thick socks so a narrow would be better. I take a UK 6.5E in the C&J 314, but that's a little short. A UK 7 extra narrow would probably be a better fit.

I'd like to figure out my sizing in the F last. Having read this whole thread... I'm trying to decide between a 40.5 and a 41. I'll probably pick up a standard width for fitting purposes rather than MTO a narrow right of the bat. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The 7.75 and narrow width complicate things. I'd start with the standard width 40.5 first. It may actually be perfect. If too short, 41 narrow may be the way to go. 41 standard will definitely be too big.
