Hi all,

This is my first post. I am looking for recommendations for alteration tailors in Toronto. I’ve skimmed through the thread (all 700 pages) and saw that Magic Tailor and Xavier were mentioned frequently, but not recently. Since I’m a beginner, I’m not even sure what alterations my suit needs yet. It is very wrinkly for some reason, especially the back.

Here’s some context: I just completed my undergraduate studies and have interviews in the financial services industry coming up. I inherited a 38R Hugo Boss Super 100 suit from my father and want to make it work for the interviews, but it definitely needs some alterations.

Here’s what I think needs adjusting:
  1. Jacket Alterations:
    • Waist suppression (I’m pinching about 3 inches on each side, but I’ve read 1–2 inches is ideal).
    • Sleeves shortened.
    • The jacket seems a bit long. Would it be considered traditional full-length, or is it too long for a modern fit?
    • There’s a slight issue with the shoulders—ends are raised slightly. Is this due to the jacket being too small, or is something else going on?
  2. Pant Alterations:
    • The hips appear too wide, and the seat needs adjustment.
    • I assume the pants are straight fit with a 1/4 break, but I would prefer a no-break look with a more tapered leg. Should I tailor the pants, or find a new pair?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Alterations work out when you just have one or two minor tweaks to make to the fit of a suit. From the looks of it, your inherited suit is too far off, and may require alteration in difficult areas like shoulders and the overall length. I suggest you look for a suit to call your own. There should be good options at every price point above $3-400.

As you admit you know little about proper fit, suggest you go to a full-service brick and mortar, with knowledgeable salesman

I'd also recommend you go to a store to get measured. If you're on a budget, try Harry Rosen Outlet, or Tom's Place.

I'm also curious who's a solid alteration tailor in Toronto nowadays. Just changed jobs that require return to office and most of my tailored outfits from pre-covid will need some adjustments.

Price isn't so much of a worry - looking for quality and someone who's got attention to detail.

Used to use Alian Designs on Yonge as my alteration tailor but it seems like he's retired now. Based on some names that have popped up on this thread - sounds like Bucharest Tailor or this Xavier are solid candidates?

Can confirm Bucharest Tailor is quite solid and price is good.

Thank you all for your input. I read that Spier & Mackay and Suitsupply are both solid options. Is there anything I should be aware of before checking them out? I will check out @suitforcourt suggestions while I am in the area.
I don't have personal experiences with either brand, unfortunately. But in general have heard decent to good things.

Sounds like you're just starting out based on your post above. Like others have said here, ideally whatever you're buying, you should try it on and make sure it fits well. Knowledgeable staff should be able to help you.

IMO since your current goal is to use the suit for interviews, I'd prioritize proper fit and suitable colours (i.e. solid, or very-close-to-solid navy/charcoal). In terms of quality, that's really going to be dictated by your budget but I would at least get wool or some kind of breathable material for practical reasons.

Anyone ever bought items from Rego on King Street? I just found out they're an Allen Edmonds stockist, so I bought 2 shell cordovan belts during their recent sale. Rego will match AE website prices, and can also do their trunk show specials. The latter is great convenience.

I also checked out their inhouse offerings. Prices seem fair for items made in China, Portugal, or locally in Toronto. Lots of material choices.

They'll even tailor items bought elsewhere.

I might try their custom dress shirts, and bespoke jeans, and dress pants.
