Hi all,

Has anyone used Farre by Emmanuel in the Yorkville village for a resole? I’m looking to have two Edward Green boots and a pair of Vass boot resoled with a commando sole rather than their original leather soles to be better equipped for our Toronto weather. Happy to pay whatever for good work.

Pious

Pious, you’re back! Still at Gucci?

I don't know this shop so can't comment. I've used some awesome cobblers in Canada. Closest ones I recommend are:

Dimar in Guelph
Fix em up in Barrie
Coakleys in London

I have separate threads for all of them. Dimar in particular has a robust online presence so check out their Instagram and Facebook pages for past results.

There is not a single cobbler in Toronto that I would trust to repair my footwear. I've probably had over 40 pairs rebuilt or upgraded over the years.

I used Dimar at the recommendation from suitforcourt and it was amazing. I need to post before/after pics but it was the best cobbler work I've ever seen. I've used Nick's and Rob's in downtown Toronto and they were both awful compared to Dimar.

The recommendation is appreciated, but Dimar is closed on weekends?

It makes a visit awkward without taking a vacation day. I see they accept mailed shoes.

Yeah, closed on weekends. I'm going to visit Pablo sometime in the near future. Maybe we can coordinate where you hand off your stuff and I'll deliver it for you. You then speak to Pablo about what you want done. A video call would be great as he can show you options. Pablo will then mail back your footwear.

Actually, I am more obsessed with Emmanuel Farré.

All through 2016 and 2017 I had a miserable existence working in FCP.
It was a freakshow of pompous twits parading around in horribly fitting suits holding cellphones and styrofoam cups.

Monsieur Farré was the shining exception.
The highlights of my day were slipping out of the office to go and get a glimpse of him, in front of the Lindt store. I nearly got fired because I had a cruel and heartless boss who noticed I was away from my desk more often than at it. Fortunately, he got fired before he could fire me because the dump was riddled with politics and amidst the domestic confusion, I could spend most of my time gawking at Monsieur Farré.

Monsieur Farré is one of of the best dressed gentlemen in Toronto. In summer, his look channels Alain Delon, circa 1960. Or think Matt Damon in The Talent Mr Ripley.

But it's his winterwear that I found most alluring. Somedays, he went for 1920s Ivy look -- bow tie, pinstripe suit, complete with raccoon fur coat. Other days, he looked like a SocGen gen banker a la pre-2008 excesses, on a ski holiday at Zermatt.....white Moncler puffer, white pants and boots with fur trim.

I didn't know he is now a cobbler.

Who are we talking about? As someone who works in FCP I’m confused because I have not noticed anyone who fits this description. And I do hang around the Lindt store at times!

The individual who has performed all the discretions has a real bespoke suit business where there is no glue and a lot of hand work performed. All of what is time consuming and he’s not working on 90% profit margin.

As far as what I saw yesterday in person he is swamped with making exclusive garments for his clients.

All these surgeries may come when they do.. let him cater to his clients that do appreciate real garments not that expensive label junk for stupendous price!!

That Dugdale Green linen DB jacket was off the charts Tim!!

I found my Nordstrom gift cards + CF mall gift cards last week after having misplaced them for a while, so I went to the Eaton Centre location last weekend to try and find something to use them on.

Men's clothing and shoes were 20-40% off: most of it being 20%, with odd leftovers being 40%. I didn't look at the CM stuff too much (I noticed two racks of Canali) but most of the desirable contamporary menswear brands (Reigning Champ, Carhartt WIP, Common Projects, Norse Projects and some others that don't come to mind ATM) and the more popular Nike/Adidas styles had already been picked through, with very few styles and sizes remaining. They still have what seems to be a decent amount of Gucci footwear (including the bit loafers) at 20% off, as an SA told me they had a big shipment come in just before the closure was announced. I sprang for a pair of white Nike Air Max 97s in my size (and from the looks of the racks and displays, the last pair in that colourway).

I honestly didn't expect the selection to have thinned out as much as it did at the 20% mark. I only found two other things I would have considered buying with my GCs so I consider myself lucky. I talked shop with the SA as he cashed me out and he mentioned that:

  • As soon as the closure was announced, all commissioned staff (partial + base hourly, though there likely were some on full commission) became strictly hourly.
  • A decent amount of the desirable stuff sold immediately after the announcement, even when there was no discount in place at the time. He told me that most of the Common Projects sold at full price, which was a little surprising to hear because it's not as if you can't find Common Projects elsewhere, but that's FOMO for you.
  • They'll still be bringing in stuff from warehouses, so it may be worth checking in from time to time.

We need a Gucci suit vivisection now. To see how much glue there is.
I would also enjoy a dissection of a Gucci MTM suit. From the Ermenegildo Zegna Su Misura factory in Switzerland, the raw material that Zegna uses for Gucci MTM is quite nice (100% silk thread and lining). External handwork is apparent though I suspect the internals would be more minimal. This includes hand rolled edges for the silk lining at the hem of the jacket, Milanese buttonholes (optional to equip your suit with milanese buttonholes on your sleeves), hand sewn tack stitches on cuffs and vents.

However, when I speak to all these selling points, clients don’t care. What they care about is ultimately how it fits and how it makes them feel (crazy right?). All the handwork in the world wouldn’t mean a thing to a client who happy to spend 100-200k on a wardrobe revamp. He is buying the convenience and style advice to help him achieve the aesthetic he wants on the path of least resistance. For a lot of the clientele at Gucci, the value of their money lies within convenience, not handwork. To them, handwork is a bonus, not a necessity.

I think it shows the low amount of intelligence some people have, not because they bought Cucinelli or whatever but by the way that they responded.
