1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    That's your pose, not mine.

I'm just a shoemaker. Never claimed to be anything else.

It was over, dead and buried for 4 days. Really unnecessary to take the effort to resurrect.

    :fonz: Thank you.

He wasn't even involved in the original disagreement.

I take some consolation, however, in the knowledge that I'm at least bright enough to know how to spell "bright."

I really wonder how long that mystery stash of antique reindeer hides will last. I wager one hide is enough for three or two pairs. Does anyone have a link to the old articles with a mention of hide count?

There's more in the waters. They just have to keep dredging it up.

How would one be able to tell if their pair was made using modern leather or the actual supply from the shipwreck?

The reindeer hide has a different sweeter scent, at least when new. Also Cleverly gives a card documenting the origin.

last article I read, I think dated late 90's/early 2000's, mentioned that the supply was dwindling. Way before I came on SF, I was on the watchforums and reindeer hide Panerai straps were all the rage. You can also find all sorts of small leather goods made on the hide all over the internet. So conservatively, the hides have been sold for the least 10-15 years. As I said before, the ship must have been the size of the Titanic to hold so much leather

When there is a strong demand (and those willing to pay a premium price), supply can become infinite (with the miracle of modern marketing).

its all a big conspiracy isnt it ?

although a few makers (shoes, bags etc) have been telling me that prices for the russian calf have been going up the last 2 years, and it really is running out now.

at the end of the day, the leather itself is nothing great. more the story than anything else. looks a bit like lizard actually. its heavy yet fragile and needs constant care.

I think we might be mixing some apples and oranges here: The limited supply that Cleverley has, is based on a few hundred bales of the hides that were pulled up from the seabed after hundreds of years. I doubt much more will be found, but I believe some are still being traded, having been bought as a novelty investment. At least that's what I understand. How much Cleverley have left is I'm sure their own little secret, but I suspect they got a bargain clearance price when the stuff first arrived as it was an unusual and unknown product, and having decided they could use it, bought a hell of a lot - maybe even cheaper than regular cow hides because nobody knew if these smelly, salty skins would be usable or not.

But Russian bark-cured reindeer hide is indeed in a theoretically limitless supply, as it's still produced. Not every bark-cured reindeer watch strap or shoe is made from that little treasure in the Cleverley collection. But hundreds of tonnes of reindeer hide, cured in a variety of ways, are produced every year in Russia, Finland etc, and made into luggage, shoes and other stuff in any country that wants to make them.

The way I understand the situation from George Glasgow at Cleverley is that it isn't so much the stock but the condition and the ability to keep diving for it. Only some of the hides are usable for shoes and the diving rights belong to the Duke of Cornwall, who may or may not permit continued expeditions to retrieve more.
