The following article is on handbags for Beijing men:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/01/17/news/rbag.php

I would love to hear your analyses.

Here are some highlights:

"People take it as a symbol of your identity," Zhou said, adding that for many men the bag signifies professional success.

In fact, Shi said, some men do not consider one bag to be enough. "They buy a new bag for every season."

Whether tucked under the arm, or swinging jauntily from the wrist or shoulder, the handbags embody not only status, but a certain style.

"Beijing is very casual," said Shi, noting that many of the capital's men forgo suits and ties in favor of relaxed outerwear like sweaters or cotton or wool jackets. "A briefcase doesn't fit in with local style..."

Shu Jienan, 55: "I think it makes me look more successful."

This is something I've noticed that has gained popularity in China. I have also seen it in Japan where some people carry large amounts of cash.

In the '80s and '90s when China was opening up, business deals were done with cash and so as an extension of that, these bags held a large amount of cash. Sometimes they were supplemented with a sort of duffel bag, perhaps containing $200,000 US in cash.

Europeans also seemed to have used these bags, although not of late.

Is it just me or are retailers losing their minds? A "man-clutch"? What gives?? And you're willing to look like.... all to carry large quantities of cash? Come on dude! Just use thicker rubber band, like a real man! The next thing you know Dior will really be trying to sell us "man-ssires"!

Why didn't they just use briefcases if they used to carry such huge amounts of money? It looks super cool in movies to open a briefcase full of money...

Ah good, turns out that "Sultry **" doesn't nearly mean what I thought it might...

I started carrying one while living in Japan (yes, to carry cash), but even there the practice is dying out---younger men don't carry them. In Europe they are all but extinct.

In these cases, briefcases actually couldn't hold the amount of cash they were carrying back in those days.

When I was at a Shanghai Camera Mall, people would buy Limited Edition Hasselbalds and Leicas with plastic bags full of cash.

I live in Europe and the "ManBag" or "Clutch" or whatever you want to call it is still used. I myself have a few and use them when I don't have my briefcase with me.
theres nothing more ville then having a tailored suit stuffed with your wallet, car keys, house keys, mobile etc.

i would rather shove my slim profile wallet, car key, cigarette, pen and my not too slim n82 in my pockets than carrying a manbag...

and if i need to carry more than that, i will gladly carry my messenger bag.
