Made the biggest mistake ever when i thought i could get bespoke/Mtm (didnt really know the difference at that time but now do) for cheap. Went to buy 2 Zegnas Trofeo tissues (mid-season, think 250-280g or so) at the zegna rep in Beirut, then allowed the head tailor there to "cut me a suit at my measures". The cost was supposed to be $750 per suit, ie paid $1500 for two. Now the tailor got me an apointment, as i needed to leave back Lebanon within 2weeks and certified he only needed 2 tries (which should have alerted me), one taking my measures -which he did, and 7 days later he brought what i, at the time thought was the body (without sleeves and with the white stuff that he ripped off). For further comfort i gave him a jacket (one of my favourite RTW suit, a francesco smalto navy blue-i know u guys wouldnt know it as too frenchy-french, but its well cut) and left it with him. Now, a month later, thru DHL i got delivered 2 suits - and SURPRISE :
they were anywhere 2 to 3 sizes bigger than me: im normally a 48r and i think this was more 52 (at least). Now, totally frustrated, i bring them to a tailor (arrangements) and the lady says we can try to fix it, reduce mass etc (again i was being an idiot, but i just couldnt admit my original mistake- i wanted to fix it). She charged me another 500 eur, ie $700.
2 weeks later i had the 2 suits back, they didnt look 2 size bigger but just one size bigger. I just cant wear this crap and ended up giving them to my friend whom they fit perfectly as he is a small 52- 50.
Threw $2,200USD down the drain- but learnt a very valuable lesson: eventhough im not a bespoke or mtm or anything specialist, i learned that you can not get on the cheap things that need to be done well.
Now, it happens that a month later im on a biz trip in amsterdam, stopped late at RL for a look, tried a couple of suits, and liked 4 of them- 3 regular blue Lables and a very classy BL (which i heard is done by caruso?). I ask the sales guy how much u doing, he says 70%- so i think ok cool ill take 2 its cool. But no, it turns up its 70% off, not 30%, so i took the 4 suits, 3 ties and a cashmere pullover to my girlfriend - all in 1,800eur.
So it turns out that you can get it cheap- just when you dont do it on purpose!

I think the mistake was using someone without getting feedback from other people first who were happy with his results.
