The state of white tie

... Global warming is probably making the heavy cloth of the vintage pieces even more problematic. So white tie can make a solid case for controlling CO2 emissions and for being an environmentally friendly dress code - reduce emissions AND recycle the old outfits. What could be better?

Not the best fit pic but you can clearly see how happy I am to wear white tie again!

I’m really not posting this to be snide or mean, but just to ask: How do we fix this? It seems like a cultural marker.

What are the two Trump sons wearing. I'll openly concede my disdain for that whole clan, but even absent that, those jackets don't look well. Eric Trump's jacket is just bizarre, like some weird hybrid of tailcoat and something else that was created by science gone awry. I can almost hear it croaking, "kill me... kill me..."

These people probably aren't as wealthy as the mythology that they cultivate would have us believe, but they're certainly wealthy enough to afford good tailors, but decline to bother.

I see students at the age of 20 with rental polyester-blend white ties here in Uppsala that look more regal than that mess.

I won't comment on the sons, but as for the father, I think the problem is the belly, it has a tendency to raise the jacket and lower the waistcoat if using a modern raise (unlike Eric earlier). Here are two politicians choosing a high rise presumably for the same reason:

To stay on subject, here is Clemenceau in almost-white-tie with some interesting details:

Aside from the red socks: single button on the shirt (and what a button), opera pumps with real bows, imperial collar, quite high armholes... surely the dessinateur was an ancestor to the i-Gent.

I vaguely remember some occasions in Sweden requiring a black waistcoat. @EFV will know the details.

Yeah someone on the ‘do you wear a suit to work’ thread was bemoaning how casual Sweden was but I remember a Swedish fella on here saying he has numerous occasions to wear white tie. I think it’s connected with academia and of course there are the Nobel ceremonies.

That would be me. In the academia you wear a black wool waistcoat for ceremonies like when you get your PhD degree or when you get installed as a professor. So, during the ceremonies the men wear black wool waistcoat and then change to the white pique cotton one when they dine at the castle in the evening. The black waistcoat is also used in fraternal orders when there are only men present. During our balls where we bring women, the usual white waistcoat is used instead.

All the above mentioned facts applies to the university of Uppsala.

The only time I've ever had the occasion to wear white tie is when I was 18-20 and was escorting / staging debutante balls. And unfortunately, I did not have the money to do better than rent the rigs.

Love the look, don't love the look of rentals. And I doubt I'll get an invitation to Buckingham at any point.

What I notice first are the sleeves. Nothing looks more infantile than overlong sleeves. Well, that, and a demeanor that says, “Mommy put me in this snowsuit and now I can’t move.”

My worry is, regular men and boys will see the so-called “most powerful man in the world”—one with a daughter in the fashion industry, for crying out loud—soundly defeated by white tie in front of the whole world. And they quite reasonably will conclude that if he can’t bring it off, neither can they.
