First of all, congratulations on your upcoming experiment. I think the ivory grosgrain is an inspired touch that will also work well if and when you wear the trews with one of the non-black DJs.

I do wonder if black shoes might not be too much of a contrast with the ivory fabric. If you'e even consider weariNg Belgian slippers with a DJ, perhaps some lighter (fawn, grey, etc.) ones could look good with that? Just thinkign laterally.
Thanks. I think I'll try first with my black DJ. I'm on the cusp of commissioning a velvet double-breasted DJ in Holland & Sherry's "Mustard" color. I think that would be a good combo. I'm not a fan of loafers in any form (except for Loro Piana's Summer Walk loafers). I've found some white patent shoes, although with black soles. I'll see what I think about the when I get them. I agree that black would not be a good choice.
There was another, too. Same basic idea, though: riffed from the navy blazer format, while near water in summer weather.
No, the Esquire illustration was the one that I was thinking of.
White bucks? Perhaps with a proper leather sole and not the red crepe.
Perhaps. I'm sure I could get Edward Green to make me something that will work. Having said that, I already have a "white buck" version of their Dover. That would be exactly what you were suggesting.

I’m always curious when vintage writers mention what was worn at “Palm Beach” exactly to what they are referring?

I’ve been to Palm Beach. What I found curious was that it’s very hard to actually see the beach as the hotels, condos etc are all piled side by side so densely that’s it’s not easy to find a way to get past them and on the beach itself!

But what exactly was the ‘Palm Beach’ that writers of yesteryear like to reference? Was there one particular venue to which the elite gravitated? One special event like the Cannes film festival or the Monte Carlo rally? One notable ball or occasion that served as the focal point? Or was it all more general for people of a certain stripe to just gravitate there during the summer months and lounge around in the surf during the day and wander out for drinks and dinner at night? The way it’s often written about suggests something more cohesive than that.

Maybe the private clubs there? Jupiter Island Club, Bath & Tennis, etc.?

If you are thinking of a nautical context, maybe aboard an ocean liner, then blue suede shoes or even sneakers would pick up the color of the jacket.

Are you referring to the island itself and not West Palm? In the former, there are a couple of very posh hotels (e.g., The Breakers), as well as the usual elegant beachfront estates owned by all the people who will be asking you to grace them with your society.

People of a certain stripe did and still do gravitate there, but the primary season there is during the winter months when those people depart from the Hamptons, Nantucket, etc.

I am not at all thinking of a nautical context.

We took our Formal Friday show on the road for Formal Friday #11 of 2021. Our first time at a restaurant of any sort since late February, 2020.

Any tips for navigating high heat & humidity? I know options are limited while still keeping a proper rig. Thinking about picking up pumps in place of my usual patent oxfords but I doubt they provide a discernible difference. Is having a shirt made up in cotton-linen complete blasphemy?

A cotton-linen shirt is fine, as is 100% linen. Another option is to have the shirt made in voile cotton (as the shirt in my images above is). Go with a double-breasted jacket in fine wool, again like my ivory jacket above, and no further waist covering is needed. Mohair is another option for a cooler-wearing fabric. But, if it's hot, you're gonna be hot. I had dinner outside one time, in the Las Vegas summer. It was maybe 95º. I was hot. I drank plenty of water and kept as still as I could. But I had to go inside to the air conditioning every little while. Above a certain point, nothing helps.

Saw this shawl collar dinner jacket with matching trousers in the window of an upscale men's resale shop. The buttons were some sort of gold flake buttons.

Didn't go in to ask about the size or price. If anyone is interested the shop is on the south side of Ventura Blvd between Laurel Canyon and Whitsett in Studio City CA.

Thanks, I was looking for some ugly curtains!

Also, what's the deal with the Back to the Future illustration?
