Perfectly okay. I am just the backdrop for her incandescent beauty. And that dress is definitely a showstopper. Thank your wife on Michèle's behalf. If your wife would like to see more/better pictures of it, there are several on my Instagram. My wife just said, "Wow, what a dress!". Sorry she didn't give equal time to your immaculate dinner jacket, @Andy57.
It's not "stupid", but if you're purchasing your first black tie rig and intend to wear it again in the future, then I would recommend sticking with the classic black, regardless of lapel type. Then, when you have another opportunity or reason to do so, branch out into more "interesting" iterations like navy, burgundy, etc. Also wanted to ask:
Is a Navy/Dark Navy tux a sartorial anamoly/stupid? Should I stick with a black tux either lapel or shawl?

I'm not really sure anymore what is technically more formal. I'm sure others will chime in with various interpretations of "rules" or guidelines, but I think the best general advice is buy what (1) looks good on you; (2) you like; and (3) you can afford. Personally, if I was buying a OneTux™ for any and all occasions, I'd go with a shawl, but only because I like the way it looks.Yes, sorry was about to clarify but you beat me to it; not stupid, maybe not as practical for #1. For my first tux, I agree it should be black.
Peak would be most formal, but shawl lapel always interested me since I saw Sean Connery wear one... Thoughts?

I agree, and this (midnight navy, not "true" navy) is actually what I was thinking in my head when I was responding earlier. Good call.Midnight navy (darker than typical dark navy) is an equally traditional choice, the lighter true navy/dark navy tuxes tended to pop-up after Skyfall (which is a killer tuxedo, but might look dated in 5-10-15 years).

A midnight navy should be barely distinguishable from black in sunlight and appear darker than black in dim or artificial light:

I opted for black for my tux cause i figured if I was ever asked to wear it for someone else's wedding party or something, odds were it would be black. Now that I'm out of peak friend wedding territory, I wish I had opted for midnight blue

Traditionally, peak is more formal and shawl is more informal...I don't think it makes much of a difference today 99% will be in the dark on the formality rankings between the two, just stay far away from notched lapels. I'd pick one off of how it suits your body (shawl shapes have a lot of variation, some can make someone look rounder or bigger, peaks can help you look broader/taller esp if you have narrow shoulders like I do).
I opted for peak, but love the look of a good shawl tux. I love the idea of being at the casual end of a formal dress code
Thanks for chiming in. Shawl just has that look of "I own this place" at least to me, and looks more custom in today's environment.
Yeah, the lighter navy is a no go for me but the midnight is really cool!!
It's funny that the midnight appears DARKER than black in low light.
I may be in a friend's wedding coming up, but I am leaning towards that midnight color.
Agree, classic.
Yeah, peak is peak formality. I definitely won't be getting notched I found one on Spier that's midnight but not in my size... I need to visit my local tailor to get sizes so it's spot on.
Have a double breasted peak lapel suit that is P.I.M.P. I am 6'7'' and thin, so the peak is really commanding. Normal to broad-ish shoulders but I really like the shawl look.
Problem is going to be finding a midnight shawl that isn't custom (or expensive) since I think peak is ubiquitous.
