The video is private. What is the event name? I’ll look it up.
It wasn't private on Sunday...

A Night of Music and Majesty: The 2024 Daiku

Last night, the world witnessed a truly spectacular black-tie event: the 2024 Daiku. This annual Japanese tradition, held in Meguro, Japan, captivated audiences with its sheer scale and musical brilliance.

Over 10,000 singers, dressed in their finest formal attire, gathered to perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The event, which drew over 6,000 guests, was a breathtaking display of musical prowess and cultural significance.

The Daiku is more than just a concert; it's a communal experience that brings people together. The energy in the hall was palpable as the thousands of voices united in harmony. It's a testament to the power of music to inspire and uplift.

Here is the event's page, and here is its LA little sister.

Checking in with the hive mind. Been out of the RTW shirt game for a while and need to replace a couple formal shirts in the rotation for a week of events after realizing a couple were past their life cycle.

Don’t have time to have either of my shirt maker get them done with the holidays. Anyone have suggestions on decent, cheap formal shirts that don’t look like crap and will fit the bill until I can have D’Avino make some with my next order? (Kamakura doesn’t seem to have any in their NY Slim fit anymore and the Tokyo slim sleeves are way too short for me)

SuitSupply seems to be the default suggestion for the criteria you give. Eton also makes a reasonable RTW formal shirt, so I understand.

Sartorial emergency gents.

Black tie optional event mañana.

Pulling out the rig and the effing dog apparently chewed my black suspenders the last time we went out.

So options for suspenders. Slate grayish blue? White? Navy?

Tux is classic (midnight) and DB, so no one will see them anyway.

Isn't white equally as appropriate? I wear all other colors anyways as no one really sees them and fuk em rules! I quite like my silver ones.

Anyone color you like as they remain unseen all evening.

VERY close quarters on the jacket. But otherwise very nice. And a well proportioned bow tie.

The weather in NYC this morning is cold and clear, but yesterday, was a mild monsoon - a near-constant rain, lasting well into the evening, an annoyance, as I had a party at the Morgan Library to attend, the dress code for which was black tie. I went one step further, breaking out my white tie ensemble for the occasion, as it's not seen the light of day in almost two years, and, essentially, just because I could. As underfoot was wet, and I expected to be standing for some three hours, I opted for patent leather lace-ups instead of opera pumps, as I needed the increased support to make it through the evening without foot pain.

To date, I do not have a top hat (the most correct form of headgear for white tie), but made do with a Homburg, as shown. As my coat and hat came off immediately upon arrival, no one noticed.

I've included a couple of photos from the event itself, to give some sense of the ambience of the party.

Attire:

White tie ensemble (jacket, trousers, waistcoat, tie) - Ede & Ravenscroft
Pocket square - Brooks Brothers
Stud set - The Persian Shop, NYC
Shoes - Magnanni for Saks Fifth Avenue
Overcoat & scarf - Turnbull & Asser
Hat - Lock, London

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
