My vests arrived yesterday, just opened them this morning.

The craftsmanship and feel are unbelievable. The thought that something over (possibly well over) 100 years old has held up so well that it is still comprehensively better than anything you buy today.

The buckle for the adjusting strap is so heavy, you could almost tow a car with it.

I have two questions which hopefully someone can help with.

Firstly, one vest has a small string loop that comes from the inside, and hangs out the bottom of the vest, the other end attaches to the back of the middle button. What is it for?

The other vest has four pockets, the second pair are smaller, and about armpit level. Do they have a purpose?

The little loop is to be fastened to your trouser button to keep everything in place. I'm not aware of a specific function for pockets up there; extra storage for all the phone numbers you'll take?

The loop on the vest is affixed to the trousers to keep the vest in place. The top pockets on the vest are for pens, cigars, glasses and such.

Thanks guys, I said to myself "If that pocket is for a monacle, I'm fucking getting one."

Sometimes shirts have a tab that goes through the loop and fastens to the trousers, as well. It keeps all the buttons lined up.

Pass. Should be a stripe, at least in my opinion. Seems this is not an "incorrect" pattern though.

I wear plaid, and it's awesome. those ones would do well with some black in the pattern, but they are totally doable.

Much prefer stripes to plaid, and I think the plaid should be a bit more bold if you are going to go with plaid in a daytime formalwear context.

They had a very nice feel to them, and the pattern was a bit more bold looking in person. I dunno, might buy them just to keep until I find proper ones.

I could wear them for other things too.

Actually kidding myself, no way I'll go back for them.

I feel like most morning trousers are slightly too dark, I want something with a touch more contrast.

You can get away with a bit more in less formal settings, and in North America, where you only get one or three morning coats among lounge suits.

Like these are too dark for my taste, even though I would kill for that vest.

    I like this shade better.
