There are two main ways of identifying shell cordovan: grain surface texture and fold characteristics.

Cordovan has more solid and less pored surface and folds are rounder and bigger.

This is a good example of cordovan:

This surface texture and creasing of the Visvim shoes look like horsehide.

hmmm...they certainly don’t appear to be. A question I find more interesting is why Mr. P would claim they are, when they so obviously don’t have the typical shell cordovan characteristics. Please share what the results of your inquiry reveal once you’ve resolved this.

Shell cordovan isn't skin, so there shouldn't be any texture (unless they applied it). That grain looks more like bull-hide/oxhide. Also, it looks like it's a padded/stuffed tongue, and I've never seen that on shell - it's just not structured like that.

And it just doesn't look like shell.

I’ve got a pair of Dinkelacker shell boots with padding on the side/back part of the shaft of the boots. It’s the only part of the boot I’m not crazy about.

Of course they are also shearling lined, which I’ve also never seen, and what ultimately made me want them.
