X-post because no answer there

seems like no pore on the surface.so is it cordovan?or polished calf ?or just beautified pic by photoshop?

i really don't have any experience with cordovan.

many thanks!

It doesn't look like cordovan to me, it looks too flimsy and the small crease in the front part of the shoes looks more like calf.

Impossible to tell from a picture, but I would guess they are shell.

I don't think these are shell. Looking at the brogueing, the leather is pretty thin and the cut outs are very clean.

Out of curiosity were those Allen Edmonds McAllisters? I don't think AE ever made that model in shell, though I suppose someone could have had one MTO'd in shell.

Recently, when there was a lot of discussion concerning Shell LWB's. I asked about the quality of Florsheims current LWB offerings in Horween Shell Cordovan, but I got no responses. So, I pose the same question again, specifically: How do they compare with other makers and to vintage Florsheims (BTW how old would you have to go to get to vintage). Trying to educate myself on these.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

Was wondering it anyone had good recommendations for a pair of oxfords in black shell. Am thinking of getting one over black calf due to the relative durability of shell, but the few that i've seen look pretty chunky and unappealing.

Cheers!

There have been very few non vintage Florsheim made in shell. What you're looking for is Made in USA Florsheim. Once they moved to India/offshore the quality went downhill, so avoid.

There was some "Florsheim by Duckie Brown" made in shell a couple years back but you don't see a lot of that floating around.

So, are your referring to the quality of construction on the Made in India? Or, are they using an inferior/lower grade of shell from Horween? Or both??

Neither. There really isn't any Made in India shoes using shell.

Just that one run I referenced.

Shell is shell though, there aren't higher grades that some people get

I believe the Duckie Brown shells are made in India also. They should have the same Horween genuine shell quality, but the construction, finishing, etc... is not so good. If you try them and find a good fit, you can probably get them on eBay for a decent price $300, bnib. Otherwise I wouldn't go for them. @ace13x
