This morning, I came to the breakfast table and got independent lectures from my wife and daughter for being inappropriately dressed. I was wearing a saxony suit (gray nailhead), with a yellow OCBD and an Irish poplin tie with a blue ground and a yellow, red and lighter blue overplaid. I had earlier mentioned that I had some business-related entertaining tonight and was told that my shirt and tie were not formal enough. I was sent back to change - my wife was specific and said I needed a bespoke dress shirt, not one of those sloppy Brooks Brothers shirts. My daughter said I didn't look "fancy" enough. Even when I returned, my first tie selection (a very dark, nearly solid navy and green plaid) was rejected as not formal enough.

Apart for trying to elicit sympathy for a henpecked dwarf, Why do I bother to tell you this? To demonstrate that some of the "rules" we discuss, whether codified or not, permeate the air enough so that normal people, even children, who pay no attention to internet clothing forums, still have a sense of what is appropriate for formal business dress and what is not.

Maybe next they can get you to start hanging out with more normal and appropriate forum buddies.

Yours isn't the only one with said opinion. I think mine would rather I hang out at biker beer halls than internet forums.

I've always thought that you are pretty sharp and you have the talent of sardonic wit.

But now I have respect for your wife and daughter too. Is this story true? Do you ever comment on their dress.

And I love your wife using the euphemism "sloppy" for BB shirts, when she meant cheap shirts.

Sounds like you had a little "Trad" seizure while dressing.

Who? Really, Carl, who? We are all dying to know. It can't be me, right, because you never, ever post about me and never have, right? Not even once. Right?

Story is true. She has criticized BB and Press OCBDs before as not suitable for wearing other than on the weekends. She has given up for the most part, except when she knows I have something specific to do that day.

My wife will never forget the day I objected to her leaving the house in hot pink and black, saying she looked like a "Good & Plenty". I have also told her once that she looked like a drag queen and another time that she was wearing curtains. She got rid of those things. Frankly, I get away with giving more than I get, so I have no real right to complain.

Scarlett O'Hara made a terrific dress out of curtains once. Or, rather, Mammy did. In any event, don't knock it.

I'm starting to like this woman. Tell her FNB gives her full backing on this point. Can we see the items so we too can criticize them?
