I tend to enjoy what i receive for christmas and birthday gifts, the people who give them to me are always close to me and i cherish them.

But tonight i was looking through stuff on a couple of shelves in my TV room looking for Sopranos season 4 and stumbled upon the gift i gave my dad last year for christmas. He had been complaining about how he had good shirts for parties with the relatives, so i bought him a white shirt.

My dad has a pretty modest style, so i bought him a Polo Hong kong RL white herringbone french cuff shirt. I found it still in the box, still wrapped in the paper the RL associates put it in, and still pinned.

I'm pretty amazed, i dont think i've ever done something like that, even the shirts that people have bought me that i truely never planned on wearing i still folded up and put on a shelf in my room, took the liberty of wearing them once or twice at least when i saw those people.

Don't worry about it. Just remember that he won't wear clothing items you get him. instead, buy him the newest golf book or a magazine subscription. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

It's happened to me, and I bet I've done it to others. My Dad is impossible to shop for; he is extremely picky and set in his ways, and he has the money to buy anything he wants the minute the concept forms in his head, and he's very much a "his way" kind of guy - he'll argue against something he's in perfect agreement with just because it wasn't his idea originally. So buying him gifts is utterly useless. You just have to not let it offend you... even though, I know, it does. In fact, my pops has gotten so bad he doesn't even pretent to like them anymore. About two years ago I got him a gorgeous antique art nouveau sterling tie clip of a nude. It was really stunning, and classy, and cool. Now I know my Dad well - he loves Art Nouveau, he is a VP on the board at a large local art museum, and he attends lots of board meetings and other functions where this would be an awesome accessory. I'd learned over the years not to buy him stuff he already uses, because he'll already have the very best version of it, or have some reason why he didn't buy the one you've bought... so you have to sort of find something he could use or needs before he realizes he wants it or needs it. Anyways, he looked at it and said "This is nice, but I don't wear tie clips." He put in back in the box and I've never seen it again. Talk about crushing. What's most infuriating is that I'd love to have it back - because it was primo and I'd rock it. Anyways, the point is I know where you're coming from and it sucks, but *******. Gotta move on. I don't spend much $$$ on him at Christmas anymore. Re-wrapping might be a good idea. An ex-gf's folks did that to her - she had asked one year for a creme brulee set, which she never ended up using, so the next year they re-wrapped it and gave it to her again. It was taken in good humor, but I personally don't think I could pull it off with my Dad! Anyways, I know I do it to other people though so I really have no grounds to talk. I do try to wear things for people, and I do have a few sweaters I wear around only because people really tried hard, but when you kick around a place like SF and you refine your tastes and preferences to this razor-sharp degree, and where $500 shoes become your standard, you get hard to please.

haha this is a good post because Christmas is coming up again.

He actually did end up wearing that shirt a few times and I bought him another for fathers day thats yet to be worn.

So lesson learned.

Interesting stories Douglas, i feel your pain as if I had another couple shirts in my lineup they would be used 10 times a year or so.

Next time try buying him a gift he wants rather than one you want him to want.

This is why xmas is marsupialed. If nobody bought gifts, and just kept their own money, they could all get exactly what they wanted and be happy instead of having to agonize over what other people want and then ultimately being disappointed both by their reactions to your gifts and what you get in return.

This year, for xmas, I'm most likely buying myself a 1080p projector and a blu-ray player. I'm get my pops a good bottle of scotch but that's as far as I'm going this year. Last year my gift was essentially thrown in my face (fancy kitchen knives and a bamboo cutting board). My brother and sister and I don't exchange gifts anymore.

The point is, there is nothing he wants that he doesn't already have. If you had read the post you would have understood that. Full asshole points though. Nice job.

That was a very well thought out gift, don't mind that guy.

I don't give Christmas gifts anymore, this solved the problem.

I actually did that to my dad for 7 years or so. Very economical.
