The Raid, aka the best action movie in at least a decade

A 20-man SWAT team attempts to clear out a 30 floor tenement building overrun with criminals. But the team gets ambushed and has to fight their way out by any means necessary. It's an Indonesian-based film by Welsh director Gareth Evans. He previously did a martial arts film Merantau with martial arts (Silat) expert Iko Uwais, who also stars in The Raid.

The Raid lived up to every drop of hype and it's completely worth seeing in the theaters. No wires or trickery, minimal CG, the entire film is just men beating, stabbing and shooting each other to death to survive.

Here's one entire fight. There's tons of clips floating around youtube, but I can safely say that if you watch all of them it won't spoil the movie.

**** that video game hater. Ebert wrote a response defending his review of The Raid that boiled down to "no one has any taste except me." He gave Wrath of the Titans two stars the next day.

Saw Wrath (in 3D) this morning.
Two stars sounds about right.
And yes, I still have that 3D movie headache. . .

Saw "Raid" today. I considered it a waste of time and money: chaotic, confusing (hard to tell most of the cops apart) and very hokey. Guys who have had the bejeezus beaten out of them time after time bounce back to become viable fighters, assault rifles that shoot as if they were belt fed machine guns, and so it went. The most extreme example is one character who has just had his hand transfixed by a large knife and then chained up and used as a human punching bag by an expert martial artist but becomes a lively, capable fighter as soon as he is freed.

Pfft. Just proves that Indonesians are tough motherfuckers. That's all.

people don't watch these films because they are believable. people watch them because they're entertaining and get your adrenaline going. i've seen more martial arts moves that i can recall that had the most fucked up storyline but because the action scenes were good, it made the movie good. i for one will definitely see this if its in theaters.

Have you never played Double Dragon or Streets of Rage?
