How does anyone know what their sizes are in random old vintage brands?

All I know is I'm a size 10D in AE Leeds' 511/1 Last, and a 9.5E in the 5/65 last.

UK shoe size seems to vary from 8-8.5

There's an element of trial and error for sure. Vintage Florsheim tend to be very True To Size (closer to the AE 511 last). I do find that I can fit them in my AE 5/65 last size as well, especially shell.

I'd say in general, go with TTS (511 AE last).

Any of you gentlemen have anything in 11.5 or 12 EEE? I have been able to manage an E width as well in certain styles, especially if cordovan rather than calfskin.

I am 8.5eee in the 65 AE last. Most AE lasts I take 8.5eee.

For vintage Florsheim, 8.5eee and 9E are perfect fits. I can also fit into 9eee, some 9.5D and some 9.5E. For the last 3 sizes, I use half insole to fill in extra length and width.

Other vintage brands, I generally stick to 8.5eee or 9eee. Best to try shoes where possible.

I wear an 11.5 EEE in Allen Edmonds, but I was very comfortable in a 12 EEE Hanover in Cordovan, but then again, I usually prefer more room to less.

I imagine some of this has to do with trial and error.

I have a comfortable pair of older Aldens in 11.5 E, but those would almost certainly not be big enough for me if they were AEs.

These are extremely tight. Not TTS. Might work for 12A, 11.5B, maybe 12B. Too bad they don't fit; I love this pair.

Another that runs small. Not as markedly small as the McAfees, but tight enough that wearing them all day is really uncomfortable. Did it twice. No interest in doing it again. Again, 12A or or 12B would probably work here.

After the local Allen Edmonds salesman pullad a Brannock and tried to convince me I was a 12B, I picked a few shoes in that size off the Bay. Pretty much a complete failure. (Though I have kept the Florsheim Imperial split-toe to clean up and try to stretch.)

These are the anomaly. Same size as the captoes from the same maker, but this obviously a very different last. Even at a 12B, these are too big for me. Really made for someone with a high instep. 13B? 13C? I was surprised at how roomy these were.

I do. I have the Kenmoor PTB in 13A, which is fine with thicker socks, but I’d really like a 13AA.

The split-toes in a 12B are a reach, but I’d like to see if they have just a smidge more room to give. I wonder if a 12C might work better than a 13A or 13AA in the Kenmoor last, since the length doesn’t appear to be a problem. Biggest issue in the A versus the AA is heel slippage.
