Yeah, I guess this thread did end up being kind of funny. Anyway, to PG2G, I have quite a few sweaters, all of which I wear a lot, but the buttondown+sweatshirt combination is just very Ivy League.

Did it have the clorox stains?

Target had some with the V stitching, but no smalls, so I didn't try on one. I'm pretty sure it was merona (house line), which usually has well fitting things. Not sure what the fabric was either, but it felt nice.

    Ok, here's what annoys me.

NiCo released a grey scoopneck sweater with a really soft wool/cash fabric and a great slim fit, really a rare find for a sweater. But then they proceeded to rip pre-fab tears into the thing and market it as "deconstructed." I mean, it's kind of cool, but they were so close to making this wonderful and uber-wearable piece. Ugh.

What's desirable about the triangle stitching at the neck? Just the ivy / trad connection? And what is / was its purpose / origin?

If you want something for sale, a year or two ago I picked up a plain gray sweater from the Gap for like $16 bucks on sale. It was a good deal, but I work at Farinelli's and compared to the Buzz Rickson four-needle sweater that we carry the quality on mine is really garbage.

When you think about it, a plain gray sweater is a timeless piece. It's never going to go out of style. Like a good pair of jeans, I think you can justify paying $100+ for one that is of high quality because you're going to wear it hundreds of times over several years.

    Good luck though.

    J. Crew has one out right now. It has the triangle stitching, fits well, supersoft, not too heavy, and a heather grey almost marbled look. Just came out for S/S 09, $39.50 or $49.50, I forget.
