Quick answer is yes its worth the price if you can afford it. I am choosing between that shoe and the modified wingtips to purchase today or tomorrow.

Then may I suggest that you go for the true, classic brogue? I think it is gorgeous. Either way, be sure to post pics after you've purchased!

The thing is, I rarely am wearing more than jeans, a button down, and a sportcoat so I am looking for something less formal I can wear with jeans. I think the modifies is slightly sleeker and less formal, but I will go in tomorrow and decide and let you know.

Hmm. I would say that the more classic the shoe, the better it looks with jeans. The modified wingtip looks more formal to me, whereas the classic wingtip is just the classic wingtip -- almost analogous to a classic penny loafer vs. some sleek modern elongated loafer.

I also think the rounded toe looks better with jeans than does a chisel.

Look forward to seeing what you select!

knowing you can get superlative shoes like EG and other makes for recession-induced pricing these days, i would hold off on paying this amount unless you really do need this specific pair.

right now for 600 dollars, you have a much broader spectrum of options to choose from so take your time in shopping for shoes.

What would you recommend for $700 these days for a full brogue?

Thanks,

Mike

you gotta ask around here, there's plenty of options but i cant think of any because im not that into shoes these days but know enough that you have options.

for one, i know EG may still have some brogues like lichfield and asquith that is priced below there i think shipped to usa. lobb has a semi annual sale every july and december with classic pairs priced at around 500-700 i believe and there's plenty of options for brogues there as well.
even vass can get you a made to order brogue (to your design /color/last/sole/leather specifications that is now priced at around 650 due to the relatively stronger dollar strength. these all above are much better options in terms of quality and perhaps thus your satisfaction for value /price you got.
but if is a matter of timing, then im not too sure.

Those are gorgeous. I think they'd look great with jeans.

One advantage to Grenson for Paul Stuart over some other brands, e.g., C&J for Polo, is the availability of varied widths. You are more likely to get a good fit.

Those are nice looking shoes. I wish the Stuart's Choice shoes were at a slightly lower pricepoint, however. If they were, for example, in the same price range as the Brooks Brothers Peal collection, I may be wearing a pair right now. For $678, you're almost in EG territory.

They are nice shoes. But in 3 months you will probably wish you had paid $200 more for EG Malverns

With the pound falling down, we should see prices deflate. We likely won't, because retailers are getting hit so hard on the rest of their business. Maybe you can find a source for a similar Grenson shoe priced in GBP?

I wonder how long before Foo posts a picture of his longwings in this thread?

If you plan to buy those shoes, you might want to look at the buy/sell forum. There's someone selling a $200 Paul Stuart gift card for $160.

Those are very nice. Ben Silver still has a few sizes of the Downing in both Antique Tan and Burgundy. I have the Tan and am seriously considering the Burgundy, although I will go into PS and check these out in person first.
