That being said, I will concede that derbys and bluchers are, in general, less formal than oxfords, but being an oxford is only one element of formality a shoe has, the others include colour, material, and decoration.
But that is not a concession. In fact, it's exactly the point. These two outfits have dramatically different levels of formality -- which is why one guy chose boots and the other guy didn't.

Agreed. The second outfit is clearly meant to be more formal than the first, and it makes perfect sense why he'd wear oxfords with that look. In fact, the oxfords look great here.

Patrick looks better and more natural than Roetzel there. Not just because of the shoes, either.

Do you think Roetzel would feel more natural there in Patrick's kind of clothes?

Like, what is the point of commentary like this? How is it relevant?

You get too easily irritated. This is a forum about clothes. If you don't like people commenting on outfits, then don't post outfits for comparison.

I think Patrick's outfit here looks better than Roetzel's.

You posted two outfits for comparison. I was weighing on my thoughts on who looks better.
That's not the comparison I was making. How do you even compare two looks like that and say one is better? Better for what? For what purpose?

Your insistence on addressing issues obliquely is indeed irritating. It's not everything you say, but in these kinds of threads it's plenty.

I like these outfits on Roetzel

I also like this suit and t-neck combo. Nice combo of colors. I also think he looks good with a beard.

I believe the previous photo is something taken at a photoshoot. The peak lapel DB blazer with graph check shirt, raw silk block striped tie, red socks, and burgundy oxfords feels too dandy for my taste. I prefer Roetzel's more subtle and conservative combinations.

I do love his books though.

I compared them by looking at them with my eyeballs and then judging which one is aesthetically more pleasing to me.
Do you recognize that they are two completely different looks? That they convey two markedly different 'messages'? In fact, that their messages aren't really even in the same genre? (You know they have different categories for literary criticism/prizes and such, right? Like, the non-fiction doesn't compete with the fiction doesn't compete with the poetry and so on.)

I made the point that one outfit was much more casual (or formal, if you prefer) than the other, which naturally and harmoniously should also lead to more casual (or formal) shoes. You sidestepped that entirely and instead passed aesthetic judgments on each. Yes, it's a discussion forum. In a discussion forum it helps to stay on topic.

As for your aesthetic preferences...would you disagree that there is probably no regular poster on the CM side of the forum who is to the right of you? I mean 'right' as in the right-hand side of a typical such spectrum. Or is that not a fair assessment?

I don't read Roetzel's look as formal. I read it as "dandy."

Do you mean conservative? There used to be people here much more conservative than me. I also like a lot of CM looks that are not conservative. I posted a photo of someone wearing a navy sport coat with fatigues and New Balances and got shit for it.
