Hi guys! Need advice/info. After hunting for KS TC in my size and a desirable color I started debating if I should just cut loose and buy one of the Drake's balmacaans. I'm trying to do the responsible thing and talk myself out of it. Would love your input. Here are the considerations that I've come up with:

1. Is wool quality proportional to the cost, i.e. is it noticeably better than KS TC or 18 East Lamar mentioned above? Is it itchy? Is it sturdy?
2. What would be the highest temp when it's still wearable?
3. Would it be easy to resell if the condition is still good?
What is a ks tc?

I apologize. It's Kaptain Sunshine Traveller Coat. I got a sense that it's kind of known here but this abbreviation was admittedly too much.
Oh I don’t know that. But I’d be inclined to guess it’s a cereal-coat. Anyways. Not my cup of tea either way.

I guess now is my turn to ask. What is a cereal-coat?

I'm not as familiar with the Lamar (though think it looks great), but the KS is amazing quality and will certainly keep you warm. Drake's is good too but you're paying for the brand name with Drake's. If you like a particular style or color more, always best to go with what you'll be happy to wear a lot

Anyway, what about the Drake's?

There is no special wool that magically causes the Drake’s overcoat to cost 3-4x of the KS TC or the 18e Lamar, it just costs that much because it says Drake’s on the tag. Whether or not that’s something you’re fine with is up to you.

I have a heavy melton KS coat from a few seasons ago and it's very warm. I don't consider it wearable above freezing, but YMMV.

A nice offer by Spier & Mackay, a Great Coat in a heavy melton fabric with a strong military vibe. Attractive style, unfortunately the cloth is 80% wool and 20% nylon.

Aside from shortening the sleeves, is there anything else that looks like it should be altered? Curious if the coat looks too long?

Also, how difficult would it be to shorten the sleeves given the buttons and strap? Found a great deal for it on ebay and wondering if I should pull the trigger.

The strap and buttons can be moved upwards when the sleeves are shortened.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
