    well,
first post , i received mine boots through a 3rd party shipment company today ,and overall construction of the boot is satisfactory,
i do have the redwings iron rangers and round toe 2940 as comparison, oddly enough as pointed out these pair of boots actually felt kind of light , compared to the iron rangers despite having a vibram outsole.
Leather i got was the renegade tan, looks alright to me :)

In terms of sizing,i wear a us 8 in the redwings both IR and roundtoe, so after looking through the advises in this thread i got a pair mineself as well. , i ordered the 8.5 which is spot on ,the length of the outsole is rougly the same as the IR infact because of
the lower profile of its toe box,the boot may look abit smaller compare to the IR.

That being said,i would put the quality of these shoes slightly below that of mine Redwings, this is probably because i am bias and is the first time i am getting a different brand, but objectively speaking
their insole listed on the website as "maple leather hill with texon" did a little search and found out texon its actually some kind of fiberboard!!
Thats a bit of a turnoff to me,i always felt the leather insoles of the red wings after moulding to an individual would be quite comfortable, you could feel the indentation or mark left by ur feet.
Not sure how fiberboard would compare :( , anyone have any long term experience with fiber board insoles??....

And one have a larger goodyear welt than the other shoe,by 0.25/0.3 cm the sole is widder but it dose not affect sizing , i measured it as well.Is it possible to sand it off at a decent cobbler ?...

Does anyone know, is there a black cap toe Homestead or Service boot available?

Chippewa makes both of these in black. J.Crew and Zappos both have versions of the black Service Boot. I haven't seen anyone selling the black Homestead Boot online but its on the Chippewa website.

Thanks, I see the cap toe in black on the Chippewa page, but can't actually find it for sale anywhere. Has anyone seen it for sale?

These boots do crease up alot ,
this is after one wear , i walked 12/13km in it, the leather is softer compared to the iron rangers , but i feel that it adds character to the boot itself.
Any one knows when the reserve collection is up ? :(

Here is a link of my experience with the brown ones. I'm not sure which ones I will keep.

I'd be very surprised if Red Wing were using anything besides leather or fiberboard for their insoles.

Still looking for the cap toe Homstead boot in Black or the Tan/Cordovan combo. All Zappos has is the two brown Homesteads, and J Crew is service boot without captoe. Any leads..?
    Thanks.

    Hi all,

Not sure where to post but I thought here was better than starting a new thread as its about the heritage line, although not the service boot.

I have just purchased the 6" CRAZY HORSE PLAIN TOE WEDGE (http://www.chippewaboots.com/footwear/original/general-utility/1901M18/ )

My question is with regard to proper care of the boot. I want to look after these boots properly and have years of life in them. How do I do this? Do I need to apply a leather conditioner? how often? I don't want to really change the colour or finish of the leather, just keep the oil in so they don't age prematurely. I seen the product Meltonian cream and Obenaufs heavy duty LP thrown around in forums (such as this) but I'm not sure if they relevant for this boot and leather type, as I remember seeing somewhere that this is to be treated like a suede.

Any info on products I should buy, how to use and how often to use them would be appreciated :) thanks guys

I had an older pair of engineer boots with that leather (I think), from before they started making them for LL Bean. I wore them for probably five years with no treatment, and they slowly got darker and smoother and took on a nice patina. At some point I started using Mink Oil about once a year, and that accentuated the darkness. The boots lasted probably 10 years (with one re-heeling) before I finally started getting a split in the leather upper. But now, after 12 or so years, I still wear them for dirty work. Really great boots. Not a fancy leather, but I think it ages well with very little treatment.

I know some people say not to use Mink Oil, but I had pretty good luck with it.

I purchased a pair from Zappos a while back that i quite like at that price. They even had sundance riptide uppers which is found on some of their more expensive boots.

Anyone have pics of the J.Crew X Chippewa service boots worn and broken in? J.Crew has 30% off and not sure if $187.60 is worth ordering. Only the black one is included in the discount, the brown ones are excluded
