Agree/Disagree?

What I mean by that is that you need to live your live while maximizing your happiness. Anything that deters you from that, balanced with other factors of course, should be eliminated.

So basically base your career, relationship, and other decisions on whatever makes you the happiest.

Thoughts?

I'm nominating you for the "Most Likely To Be a Philosopher" award.

You always come up with the most interesting **** -- be it Dumb Threads, General Chat, or Social Life.

Is this tongue-in-cheek?

To the OP, I don't think you can categorically say that about everyone. I'd say it's true for me...but if I was a philosopher in search of "truth", I would probably be willing to forgo happiness in lieu of something more. That brings us to the definition of happiness. Without defining that you can't answer the question.

i agree that life's goal is to achieve happiness.

but it is slightly more complicated than that. not at the expense of others, and not to achieve it through decisions that compromise long-term happiness.

but i still voted for sexy Anne and her Picasso painting face

Agree. For you younger guys if you think money will make you happy think again. I thought that too at one time and was SO wrong! I guess you just don't know until you experience it. Knowing what I know now I would rather be wealthy in happiness than in money. I would have asked out every pretty girl I was attracted to out with no fear of rejection. I would have had ALOT more faith in myself and my decisions. I would have chased every dream. Sometimes it just takes awhile to "get it". Being miserable in nice clothes and cars is still miserable. BE HAPPY

Obviously it isn't that simple. But if pursuing philosophy made me happy, according to logic in the original post, I would be likely to pursue it, everything else being equal, of course.

I'm not saying it's not common sense either.

I voted yes ..... BUT: some of the things that make me happy include: being a good family member, supporting my community, constructive work and making other people happy.

that's cool, but sort of meaningless.

you're just doing what makes you happy.

There is no doubt something valuable in the concept of utility, as applied to the individual, but to mix Germans with Englishmen, I don't think you can make it a categorical imperative.
