I personally don't care for the punching either. A more general question - what is the purpose of the punching on an otherwise smooth piece of leather (other than a medallion on the cap)? The second pair in particular begs the question. I'm not trying to start a flame war - I just don't get it.
Regarding the original question, that is what I would call classic straw horse stuff.
Uh, what's the point of brogue? It's about aesthetics; some people think the punching adds it, others don't.
I don't disagree it's about aesthetics. In the case of brogue I would say it is about a transition between a definite break in the surface area.
