You know the story: you're shopping, you spot a wonderful item and of course, it's not available in your size.

Or worse, it's available in your size, but you convince yourself that you don't really need it. Or that it's too expensive. And then regret it but can never find that particular item ever again.

Share your tall tales of "the one that got away" here!

I'll kick off by saying I am very disappointed that the pair of burgundy-coloured patent leather medallion derbies I found in Dolce & Gabbana were available in a 5 and in a 7, but sadly not in a 6. They were horrifically garish and would have been truly, truly wonderful with a sober navy suit. Now I'll never know.

I found a beautiful pair of english made dark tan trousers with a very large brown check on them at the off 5th in woodsbury for $30 and for some reason I didn't buy them. Probily my greatest shopping regret.

Plain navy corneliani suit at Neiman's last call. It was an e52 and the jacket would have fit with no alterations, but it had mistakenly been placed in the US52 rack with the other huge suits, and had gotten a few markdowns as it had probably been sitting there awhile. I wanted to wait a week to get it as they were starting their 20% suits sale a week later, and it would have been $280 instead of $350, and they wouldn't place it on hold for that long. I came back the morning the sale started and it was gone

I should have just bought it at $350 as it would have been a perfect interview suit for me. Damn having a budget and all...

interesting topic. i have few regrets when it comes to purchases made or not made. there are, however, items that i do not buy that turn out to haunt me. for example

light brown shell alden leisure hand sewn loafers, half price, my size, shoe mart ... they sat on the website for weeks and i went back and forth. visited them again and again. and i decided not to buy them and stop visiting them. eventually they sold.

in retrospect, i know more about fitting my feet than i did then, and these were probably not going to work. so i am better off. good thing i passed.

BUT i think about them too often. someday i will put this ghost to rest. i will find and buy a light brown shell loafer that fits well & i will wear them without socks in the summer

Not unless citishoes.com has your size, you won't - Alden hasn't made an LHS size run in whiskey shell since last year.

I guy offered my a very good price on a glashutte watch last month, which still haunts me

I don't dwell on the past, it distracts from the now.

Hmm...this has never happened to me. Unfortunately most of the stuff I see out there is not in my size, and the things I do buy end up being the things I regret.

Try being a 36" chest and a slim one at that. Not only do you never see your size but many brands start at 38". You scour the racks working back from beautiful items in 46, 42, 38, and if there's anything in the 36 section at all it's utter rubbish.

It's the same with trousers. 30" is just too roomy without an alteration and 28" is much better. Only the uber high-end stuff or the throwaway-fashion stuff goes to 28".

If anyone were to even make a suit in my size, it would probably be something like a 32XS

Yeah, when I get around to my first MTM suit it'll probably come out at something around a 35". Some 36" just feels like a 38" to me - really huge and the slim 36" products that fits great is stuff like Zara, which is okay but I'd like that cut with more quality.
