^IIRC, A/X was started as a license deal simply to get at a customer who'd never/could never buy regular Armani but wanted the name. I seem to remember reading once that it actually was started as an Asian license and then moved into the US market... but I can't remember for sure.
IN any case, it makes Armani a lot of $$$ while managing not to dilute his brand image. I'm not exactly sure how he can do what others couldn't (Ferre's short-lived GIeffeffe line, Versace V2, etc.) but somehow he manages to keep laughing all the way to the bank.
