It's a twofer tonight, and if this isn't among the best < $20 cabs anywhere I'll eat my dorky Titleist hat. Have seen it online as low as $14.99 and would happily pay 3x that for the quality.

For those in NYC or in a state to which it ships, Astor Wines is 20% off all Italian wine today. Tempted to buy a bottle Masseto but am confident that my wife would punch me in the face. A few great deals on less expensive / collectible wines.

Two tonight. The Tondinia was OK, but nowhere near as nice as the Ardanza 2001 I posted earlier.
The Palmer was nice; very complex with lots going on. But I've had more enjoyable wines for less.... probably wasted on me.

Ruby tone with a crimson edge. Fresh mission plum, dried red fruits, dried roses, and turned soil aromas dominate, with hints of leather and pipe tobacco. The palate shows a harmonious balance of red fruits and earth, with a faint dried tobacco tone leading the herbal character. The serious, long finish is driven by silken tannins. Perfectly-aged Crianza from Spain’s greatest vintage in decades. Drink now - 2030.

Opened a 2018 Ornellaia Le Volte tonight (third wine from the estate). Interesting vintage that I will be very curious to see how it impacts Ornellaia proper.

Explosion of red fruit, chewy tannins and a hint more sweetness than I was expecting. But since I accidentally put too much salt in my porkchop's dry rub, it balanced out beautifully.

I joke with friends that Le Volte is what you drink in the five years you wait for Le Serre Nuove (second wine from Ornellaia) to be ready and the 15 years to get Ornellaia proper to its ceiling.

Interesting article in the AFR magazine on Friday about Penfolds California dreaming. The wines are being released in March. Don’t know if any will make their way to Oz

I read the First Bottle email in the 300 "this is Sparta!" voice. It was much more enjoyable than the intended intonation.

For anyone not on the email list, this was the subject line "?PENFOLDS!!!!!"

Interesting to see numerous California projects come to life this year. In addition to Penfolds, DVO (Dalla Valle Ornelia) will release later this year. Wonder what's next. Petrus Sonoma?
