Tonight my father and I went to visit a family friend who is a winegrower on the side. We were drinking his Cabernet Franc, which was rustic but enjoyable - immensely enjoyable under the circumstances. There's something extraordinarily honest-feeling in sitting around a long-time friend's table and drinking his wine from vines sitting 50 yards from the house.

And this sounds wonderful.

I think it goes down further than 70, at least according to what I read way back when I first read Parker's newsletter. The idea was to make it like a grading system, where <60=F. Of course, no one will buy wine at 79 or even 80, which means B- in the wide world is a failing grade.

Yup-

Says a local distributor here, especially above $15 a bottle, if it says anything less than about 88 on the shelf, it won't move... he says for that reason some shops have stopped posting ratings "WS 93" etc along with the bottles .

Realistically, do you guys think we(American wine-consuming public as a whole) will get past the current numbered-score rating obsession anytime in the near future?

I drink a lot Bord that never gets rated. I have no idea what # they would give it. Would rather they never bothered, as neglect keeps the prices down.

On a serious note, I found out recently that the 100 point wine scale is not really 100 points. It is thirty points from 70-100.

And in reality, it's 15 points, since publishing scores under 85 are pretty rare. And at that, it's only a 12 point scale, because if it scores under an 88 you might as well not buy it or try to sell it.

Yes. Wine consumption is on a steady rise in America. I think once wine knowledge gets to a certain point, people will trust their own palates or the advice of a trusted wine shop over critics. But that's probably just wishful thinking.

Anyone here have any experience with 09 Chablis? I know it was rated pretty highly, but haven't tasted any. Looking for thoughts on the vintage as a whole or specifically on Drouhin Vaudon.

So two people have at least tasted the wines but neither have anything to say about it. You guys are very helpful.

It's a very good year. If you make it out here we can try some Raveneau too young.

If we steal your friend's idea about how to open up a wine storage business, you could have access to wine whenever you like. Besides, driving to California over three days is best anyway!
