After a bottle of Sanford Pinot and a Bordeaux, and before the Champagne, I'd like to say, before I'm completely trashed, Happy New Year to all the gang in the wine thread. You guys are the best. Cheers, a

ok... finished off the 2nd bottle for tonight... does the fact that I like the '07 7 Deadly Zins more than the '06 The Dead Arm make me a bad person?

oh.. had homemade gnocchi with truffle marinara and sausage with mozzarella and tomato salad..

I'm on Kauai and normally would expect the wine selection to be pretty dismal but have been pretty impressed so far - NYE is starting with a bottle of Champalou Vouvray imported by Kermit Lynch to go with shoyu poke. Dinner will be grilled freshly caught Ono with Salon 1996. I've also picked up some RRV Dumol PN and some Turley Zin - both are fairly recent vintages, but what the hell. Had a 2006 Kosta Browne PN at dinner last night too - so much for being on the edge of the earth and the middle of nowhere...

Best wishes to everyone in this threak! [IMG]

Had dinner this evening at my house with a lady I've been seeing a bit. She's south Asian and brought a Morrocan Lamb dish with couscous. I made an eggplant/tomato salad and baklava. Also made some fresh hummus for before dinner.

For bubbles it was a 2000 Piper-Heidsieck (WTSO purchase) and with the lamb I popped a 2007 Les Pallieres les Racines Gigandas.

Delamotte Brut MV (fun fact: Salon's sister winery)
Vilmart & Cie Brut Grand Cellier, 2004

report: the Delamotte was solid, but nothing particularly special. The Vilmart, on the other hand, was awesome. It had great depth and balance, would recommend.

Oy. Not focusing so well right now.

    Couple different champs, one a Krug one a grower's I can't remember.
    04 Alsace
    02 Volnay
    02 CdP
A left bank Bord, can't remember more than that.

Closed the night doing shots of some doctored up bourbon with the Somm and head bartender.

Delamotte gets the grapes in the years they don't produce Salon right?

The '96 was sublime - a very fine wine that was perfectly balanced and the added charm of tight moussy bubbles. Chalky (in a good way) minerality that paired well with the simple fish preparation.

The Vouvray was delightful too - I generally do not enjoy CA chenin blancs and this French one demonstrates what a nice wine it can be when done properly. A $16 foil to the extravagance of the Salon...
