Picked up a couple of bottles of 2006 Rombauer Zin at the store a couple of weeks ago. Popped one a few days back. Very fruity. Wouldn't describe it as light...more sweet. Was at dinner with my new "interest" last night at a very nice place (Kwilk might remember my friend that was on "Next Food Network Star"...her ex-hub's place) and saw the 2007 Rombauer Zin. Huge Fruit!! Like a dump truck of fruit. My date described it as almost port-like. Might not sound appetizing, but believe it or not it was actually very good. She thinks I'm a genius.

Not for picking that particular zin, no, but rather for strategically picking a 16% ABV wine with a touch of sweetness. Lube.

I wouldn't call any nearly 16% alcohol wine, especially the Turley light! (fantastic year though). Have you tried the Grenache? It was impressed, more so than the petite shryah

I haven't tried anything but their Zin. Actually, I didn't even know they had a Grenache. I don't remember seeing anything but Zin in their mailer to me this week or in past mailers. If there is one, I'll have to try it, as Grenache has become Mrs. Piob's favorite varietal.

I guess this is part of the problem with wine reviews and probably why I stopped doing them and had to be coaxed into the few sentences I will now toss up. I used "light" to mean light tannins, light on depth and complexity, and just an easy drinker that you don't try and analyze or think about, just sip as you chat with the wife. Yes, abundant, jammy fruit. The ETOH tastes light though and the wine is not hot in the least.

The Turley Grenache may be a winery only thing as I did not see any in the latest mailer either. Petite Shyrah, however, is in the mailer. I highly recommend the Grenache, I would decribe it s a caricature of the some CDPs (the more Grenache heavy bottling).

I hope to do a stay in the Paso Robles area either late this year or sometime next year. Turley is on my list of places to stop and taste.

Be sure visit Tablas Creek! Also, Ian McPhee's Grill is a fantastic resteruant (Moderately priced too).

I shall. I want to make sure to hit Linnie Collado, and several others too. Our plan is to stay at a nice place in town, like we did in Healdsburg. That was just perfect for things.

Vino? I actually live a few blocks from the place. It's on College Ave, next door to La Farine and Wood Tavern, right? Anyway, it's not a bad place but can be a bit limited in terms of California selection--Paso Robles, and the general southern/central regions of California are almost entirely absent. Resultantly, they have few decent Californian Petite Sirahs, they're almost entirely from Napa/Sonoma.

^^^ Sounds right. As I recall the shop (from 15-20 years ago) it was Bordeaux and cab heavy, not so much on other stuff. Though back then the category of "other stuff" was much smaller and more limited.
