Got this last night to stop storing wine in cardboard cases in a corner of our apartment. Best part? The individual selling this was remodeling Eleven Madison Park, so this has a lovely history. Each steel shelf weighs like ten lbs, this was crazy to get into the apartment.

First time having D'Yquem. Lived up to the hype.

Aaand this was the official oldest wine I've ever had. No color left at all, it looked like a white wine. Tasted like old white Lopez de Heredia. Pretty crazy.

Has anyone here used a wine list from restaurants with a good wine program as a way to seek out new wines? I haven't tried it out until recently, it's only more challenging because I end up needing to drive to New Jersey for the more obscure producers.

^ In my limited experience, finding the cheap bottles on a list from a restaurant with a great wine program can be very fruitful. For example, when I ate at Paul Bocuse last year I asked for a demi-sec vouvray, of which they only had one. It happened to be maybe the cheapest bottle on the menu ($50), and it was fantastic. Now I look for wines from that winery and buy them whenever I see them.

It's about time you jumped on the Rioja wagon. Now get yourself some Priorat.

Cracked my '09 Chateau Pipeau. Wasn't the best from that area I've ever had, but it was $35 on release and I've been saving it for a special occasion.

I think I killed a baby, though. Needed a couple hours to open up and even then, it was pretty bold.

On another note, I sort-of forgot about how much I like a good tannat.
