Here is a good start. . .
Replace the common projects with boat shoes if you're over 30 or just think $400 for sneakers is insane. Throw a Barbour Beaufort or Bedale in there. Love the Alden Indy boots... still on my list.
So Red Wings or Woverine 1000 miles do not get any love from the SW folks?
BTW best way to learn for thrifters is visual memory so I invite people to post pics of their finds in SW domain, thrift or bargain. Educate us.
They definitely do. If you want your mind blown, check this thread. I'm from the SW&D side and I still can't wrap my head around it. $1,000+ for very average looking shoes.
On the topic of finding art at the thrift, I found this gem a couple of months ago at a SA. It was behind a pile of prints from Pier 1 or whatever.
I bought it simply because I liked it, it's an original oil painting and it has the cool light on top of the frame. The fact that it might be valuable was an after thought. I got it home and did a little research and found out that Hugo Valerio was a post-impressniost painter who spent most of his life in Venice, and was known for his paintings of the Venetian canals, such as this one.
A couple ebay auctions show much smaller paintings going for 7-9k. Not that I'm going to sell this anytime soon
Also found this cool print a couple weeks ago, refinished the frame myself!
I'm no cobbler, but those shoes are mostly made of distressed lamb leather and in very few quantities. I think that adds to the price. Also, you often need to proxy shoes from Japan and also consider the brand equity that goes with the goth ninja style. Would you be caught dead in a $75 MSRP H+ M funnel neck sweater or would you settle for nothing less than a gauzy 60% linen 25% silk 15% viscose Rick Owens shawl? More than most, those folks who buy MA+, Guidi, Ann D. boots are snooty fucks who equate spending wheelbarrows of cash with style.
.... or live in the South.
I certainly wouldn't argue materials and construction -- at that price it better be the best. I just don't understand how you can justify spending that much.
This says a lot about it though.
I never did understand the whole "goth-ninja" look. SoCal was into it for awhile (Might still be. Haven't heard from him in awhile), but he could pull off pretty much anything.
thanks to EVERYONE (acosbysweater, horse's_ass, DM7, grendel, VLSI, nataku , shadesofbeige) who cracked an egg of knowledge all over our collective heads.
based on what i've looked at, it looks like there are 4 distinct looks:
lots of layers
rich man's j crew
plain clothes, $1k denim
like GMM, i've never heard of almost any of these brands.
Lol, certainly not 1k denim for the most part. More like 200-400. Go check fits in waywt by ivwri and asobu (spelling on these?). Similar to your #1 description, but far from goth ninja.
Didn't thrift for 3 weeks....and clearly the thrift gods smiled favorably upon my sacrifice...
Not pictured but still worthy of mention...White Charvet shirt, two Paul Stuart shirts and a pair of pale yellow M3F Bills.
...also thought these looked like they were okay so I picked them up too....
Spoiler: Warning: Spoiler!
^^^ Wow - nice shirt haul, hmmurdock!
Thanks everyone for the SW&D knowledge, very helpful and interesting. That's what I love about this thread.
Some recent (non-SW&D finds) -
Not really sure if these would work for me, but for $7 I figured I would give it a shot:
The stitching is visible from the inside of the shoe - does that mean it is blake or blake/rapid stitched?

Anyone know who makes these for RL?
Anyone have any experiend with Timeo? Found a pair of flat front cords (made in Italy) with weird zippered cuffs (about a 34/35 waist - available):
And a l/s poplin shirt from Bills Khakis (marked a Medium - available):
