1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

I wish I knew about thrifting back in school. Once I paid my rent by buying all the $1 books from the used book store in my parent's town and reselling them to the used book store in my college town. :D

The closest I ever got to flipping was that glorious week on eBay when I lucked out and all my Criterion DVDs I hadn't opened yet went out of print.

[IMG] Not until sometime next week. That is a shame, they are around a 37-38S, 23" sleeves. Two Brown (light and medium), one pinstripe power suit type, then a more casual pinstripe, IIRC. I am not sure they would be appropriate for an interview, however, the browns are solid colors and would probably be appropriate. Hopefully they will still be there and I have the remaining colors correct.

 Oh, not much at all. It's a funny story, but I compressed it; I basically had to repeat the process a couple times with each store, selling each one the other's $1 books. They really don't pay much at all, but since I know a lot about literature, as well as what each store would purchase (and their current inventory, since I spent so much time browsing), I was able to turn $50 into $350 in a couple of visits back and forth.

I've had what I'd consider some great book scores (for me -- a $350 William Burroughs book, some out of print David Foster Wallace first editions, etc.) though I always keep them for my greedy self.

It's getting a lot harder now that they seem to double check everything online. Still, occasionally one slips through. :)

Some cool stuff I'm keeping for myself:

Vintage Yves Saint Laurent made in France smoking jacket:

Yamaha mixing board. No idea if it works, but just couldn't pass it up. Need to get power adapter.

Holland & Sherry buttons rescued from a Hong Kong tailor jacket. I mentioned these pages back. Went back for them, coat was on 50% tag, so I got the buttons for ~$3. I'm thinking about turning the sleeve buttons into cufflinks.

Found these about 8 months ago. Was going to restore them and flip, but I have too many other projects at the moment. I'll let them go cheap here.

Freeman shoe company. No marked size. Measurements are:

    Outsole length: 11.75"
    Width: 4.25"

I'm really overwhelmed by yall's kindness. I've been PM'ing with a couple of members and didn't realize there was such a response. I really want to express to all of you my gratitude for your offers and well-wishes. I shared this story thinking I might start a "pay it forward" thread, or at the very least hear some other stories y'all may have, but I didn't expect this. I'll get to each of you individually as soon as I'm able. Thank you all again.

Maybe we can all find a way to pay it forward this weekend somehow [IMG]

    :wow:

The one and only time I ever found nice shoes was last summer. Picked up two pairs of Jimmy Choos and a pair of Louboutins for my wife. $50 each and included the dustbags. They were at a garage sale. The lady running the sale said "you should have been here when we opened. The women were jam packed in that closet and were fighting over purses and shoes". My wife just about cried. Wonder what we missed.

I can't ever imagine finding stuff like that in a thrift store, though. Insane....

Quit trolling bro. Even a reply to this post is trolling. As they say, NRN.

    I'll add a big +1 to that.

My inventory of quality, black L/S dress shirts has doubled at virtually no cost to me thanks to the generosity of the folks of this thread. It's not like I couldn't pay for them but no one would accept my money. As soon as I get through this busy couple of weeks, I'll be paying it forward.

BTW...frenchy saved me from making a high dollar mistake with some skis a while back. I'm not sure if I said thanks back then but I am saying it now.

IIRC you did all right at that sale as well

    Why was frenchy banned again?
