At the Goodwill Tuesday, I had a younger gentleman with a U.K. accent approach me after he had tried on a sport coat that he had decided was too small for him. He thought that if it fit me, I might enjoy owning it. It was an Oscar De La Renta, single breasted, unvented and the color of nearly dry mud and he excitedly told me it was quite expensive when new. I tried it on to humor him. Thank goodness it was a tent or I might have been forced to buy it to spare his feelings.

I tried on a luxuriously soft and gorgeous navy blue Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece polo (pullover 3 button) shirt which was too large for me so I thought I'd return the favor and offer him something of real value instead of the Hilfiger polo he was purchasing. He passed. You can lead a horse to water...

ha my next thrift goal is to find some decent polos. I think thats one of the hardest thing to find condition wise.. Usually worn very hard. I'm of course passing all the $8 Ralph laurens unless it was brand new condition and fit perfectly.

I've found and bought one Paul Stuart and three Brooksies in excellent condition. Unfortunately, I'm apparently no longer a medium and there's damned few smalls out there.

I've been picking up a lot of NWOT, clean-looking, unbranded polos recently, stuff to keep or give to friends; found a whole buncha Lands End, size Large, and some surprisingly good, made in Los Angeles polos around small/medium. I think they're American Apparel. Does that sound right? Surprisingly nice and trim (I just can't decide if they look right on me). Will trade if you're hard up. :) I've also got some shiny expensive ones for B&S: Canali, Zegna, Z-Zegna, Missoni.

The store I usually go to has tons of polos, I'm just too lazy to flip though them all.. If I spent time flipping through everything in the store I'd be there for 3+ hours lol... As of now I'm flipping through SC/Suits/Ties/Shoes/Coats Feeling with hands on sweaters (cotton vs wool is ez tell), and kind of looking through the slacks section, but most of the stuff is double pleated. I don't know how ppl do it hitting 3/4 stores a day..

My canned response for this kind of thing is "Actually I already have one at home just like that, but thanks.". Usually that gets rid of them.

Whaaa...that sucks. I'm usually the other guy, exhorting shoppers to grab hold of the fashuns while they can. Biggest achievement: decking out this prom-minded kid in the only complete Pal Zileri suit I ever found. It worked well because he was oversized, the way any good thrifted item is likely to be. His mother wept.

At retail outlets, there's definitely a chance. I bought a pair using a groupon from Denim Bar about a year ago (50 for 150, so I got them for $80 dollars). When Nordstrom discontinued selling APC items, they popped up on their clearance racks for around $80-90 (though this may have been only in certain markets - I was living in DC at the time. I believe I saw NS on sale in-store at Barneys for around $120 as well.

However, I have never seen APC's on-sale online unfortunately; the price is definitely more protected than Nudies. Your best bet might be ebay or B/S, but I find that most of these are broken-in and are still being sold for $80-ish. The jeans should last you a couple of years, so I'm even at $175, you will get your money out of them.

Some BB items are very good IMO. I'm wearing a pair of stone grey chinos today, the cotton is quite nice! I am planning on buying several more pairs when the budget allows :)

My target still has the Missoni crap, (rubber boots, kids clothes, etc) is it worth anything?

Just a note on the "restrict the thread" discussion that's been going on.

As I mentioned, I PM'd J, High Overlord of SF and originator of this very thread. J wrote me back, and while sympathetic to the plight, is both disinclined to restrict the thread and also unsure that it would even be feasible to set the thread up that way.

So, as much as we might be frustrated with our own knowledge being used against us, I am afraid that we have to accept that the genie is out of the bottle. I think it is true, however, that the average thrift store manager/employee won't be able to keep up with everything, anyway. I think we just need to relax and enjoy the benefits we get from it.

    Keep calm and carry on.
