my favorite ethrift of probably the last five years -
IMG_5536.jpeg

ssl - i picked up an amazing Schott B3 on craigslist in 2015/16 and it was tragically a size too large for me, ended up selling it to pay rent. so when after almost a decade of trawling recent listings for ‘vintage military jacket’ this popped up last week at ~$75 shipped and i couldn’t smash the buy button fast enough.

doesn’t have quite the jeux ne se quoi as the schott or raf models but otherwise my platonic ideal, miusa in the ~80s, superb condition and built like a brick house.
IMG_5533.jpeg

stay warm and be thankful my thrifting comrades, good luck out there.

I’ve never owned anything by RR. Is that good?
I used to love their old Bluewater canvas shorts back in the 90s. Held up just as well as my Stand-Ups. They also made some decent knitwear. Not sure what the brand is like today.

I was just thinking about what we thought of the Royal Robbins brand when I was working at REI back in the day (1995-97). It was the brand that the stodgy older Sierra Clubbers wore, so we young guns (I was 19 when I started at REI) wouldn’t be caught dead in it.

The irony is that I’m now a stodgy older Sierra Clubber, but the stigma remains. So I’m still wearing Prana and Patagonia (and Melanzana of course).

I was working retail in Canada 1988 to around 99 and RR had the same rep there. But I did like those shorts. I had the chance to have dinner with Robbins and some reps at a trade show in Toronto and he was a nice guy. So I have a bit of a soft spot for the brand. We were also one of the first stores to carry Arc'teryx around 1992 and that stuff blew everything else out of the water as soon as it hit the racks. Chlorophylle out of Quebec was another cool, under the radar "if you know you know" brand. Patagonia was crazy expensive for us what with import duties, etc.

That’s cool that got to meet Robbins. I’ve met and hung out with many famous climbers, but not him.

I don’t know when the shops started getting Arc’teryx stuff in California, but I don’t recall seeing it until the early 2000’s.
