1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    Cheers,

For what it is worth, I sit on the board of a not for profit and I shine shoes for donations to said not for profit. I'd be glad to do yours for a small donation.

I think Berners is being unfairly castigated and people have very selective observations. I'll say again, his first post was not offensive and it certainly did not single out any one person. Travers then responded to said post in a hostile fashion asking the question "are you a f****** communist?". It was not travers who was directly provoked, if anyone it was Berners and it was entirely justified that he then responded with a patronising attitude.

    YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!

Why??!! It seems to me from your first post in this thread you were dismissing the elite and the insights that they might have acquired through dint of hard work, study, objectivity, etc.. Even money.

why would you want to be associated with such people?

    No?

    He may even be right.

Subsequently Munky took issue with that characterization, pB disagreed with him, chogall (as far as I was able to understand his post) also disagreed...all politely and civilly.

    And then there was this:

    At which point....

We really can't rewrite history even if we want to. Collective memory and all that.

    Interesting...

On the other hand I think there's too much self-justification, misdirection (rewriting history, as who should say,) and unwillingness to be accountable for what we say, going on here.

Maybe, as the apparently forgotten snippets indicate, there's not enough reading (the lines themselves nevermind the in between) going on.

It occurs to me that Berners might even be able to defend himself.

Why would anyone take issue with any of that? If the shoe doesn't fit then....

I agree....wholeheartedly. But the same could be said for all the slightly off base and sometimes nearly incomprehensible things that Travers said.

And yet..I've watched him be bullied...yes, bullied...for months.

I guess "if the shoe fits" only applies if it's someone else's foot.

Just had to look back to check and yes i stand by what I said. Berners did not single any one person out.

You missed the first two sentences out of the second quote which makes it look worse than what it was.

It's been blown out of context and proportion.

That's as maybe but then travers directly attacked Berners, a far cry from general sweeping aspersions which can be easily brushed off as nonsense if you really wanted.

I think The problem is that some truth rang through his words which ruffled some feathers, the proverbial poo storm ensued.

I have a suggestion: let's get back on topic.

Someone said earlier you can't get a good mirror shine with Burgol. This is incorrect, we use Burgol in our shop every day. We don't mirror shine our display shoes but we do it on our own shoes and it works great. If anyone needs tips for technique just email us and ask for Alexander, he is our shine expert.

If you're walking the mean streets and you're suddenly surrounded by a pack of feral dogs nipping at your heels...well, when all the "nice doggies" have been exhausted, you're likely to kick out--at the dog nearest and easiest to reach. I think Berners was just the nearest one.

    I've been there.

I won't defend Travers but I won't applaud or justify his banning either...much less excuse the deliberate (?) provocation that led to his probably predictable and quite natural response.

    Cotton wool...

    Bubble wrap...

Anyway forget it and let's buy some products from leaves shop, can't beat a bit of shameless plugging.

How much provocation does it take to get a cat to scratch you?

Maybe a lesson here for all of us.

    And FWIW....I'm willing.

I hope that the moderator thinks twice and that Travers is still looking at this site. Travers made a considerable contribution to this thread and I would welcome him back.

Travers was indeed passionate about shoe care. But that does not excuse how offensive he became...and that sort of behavior is not passion.
