Renovateur contains beeswax, mink oil, hoof foot oil, and lanolin, right? So it's going to dissolve different things than water will dissolve. For that reason I still think a slightly damp cloth is worth it. Distilled water would be the best.

These should not require conditioning before wearing. They don't keep them sitting around long after they are finished.

then forget about it in the first place.

you'd better ask the seller/maker what he recommends than some strangers on the interwebz.

This may sound stupid; but is there a reason why he shouldn't condition them before wear? Preventive vs. repair? Even though my shoes aren't MTO or bespoke, I always liberally apply lexol leather conditioner overnight and give them the initial shoe-shine-regime the day after.

why would you clean a spanking brand new pair of shoes coming from two of the leading rtw companies in the world???

certainly, he can do whatever he wants to. as it has been mentioned several times. everyone can develop his own regime - learning by doing. imo, there are no stone written rules.

I condition my new shoes, not clean. As said, I understand there won't be nearly as much need for conditioning on a MTO pair as on a RTW pair, but IMO it wouldn't harm them either. Or am I wrong?

I used renovateur as aftershave last night. Works wonders and only slightly cheaper than the stuff I normally use by the ounce.

So your face is bright and shiny today? Did you brush buff or polish with a soft cotton rag?

    AFTER-shave?? Pre-shave, during-shave...sure. But after-shave...that's just crazy :).
