UFC and M-1 reopen talks; White hopeful for Emelianenko and Mousasi in the UFC (Updated)
    Dann Stupp, MMAjunkie.com
    7 hours, 2 minutes ago

PrintApparently, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's door hasn't completely closed on notables Fedor Emelianenko and Gegard Mousasi.

Although the M-1 fighters are signed in the U.S. to Strikeforce and past negotiations with the UFC fell apart, UFC president Dana White said he recently reopened talks with M-1 Global boss Vadim Finkelstein.

White wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the discussions and said only they've taken place "more recently than you would think."

Finkelstein's recent Twitter message came a day after White confirmed the renewed talks.

White's update, which raised more than a few eyebrows, followed a simple question asking if Mousasi, the former DREAM middleweight champ and current Strikeforce light-heavyweight title-holder, would never be a UFC fighter.

"I wouldn't say he never would be," White said on Saturday. "It's not that I don't want to talk to M-1. I want to get this [expletive] done. I want him, and I want Fedor. I want to do it. And I never say never. They can call me right now, and we can start talking and figure this thing out. I'd love to get Mousasi in here. He should be. He deserves to be.

"I like [Mousasi] a lot. I'd love to get him in here and try him out with some of the other guys."

When pressed for details, White declined to elaborate but confirmed the talks have taken place recently.

While certainly good news for THE UFC fans who want the top fighters under the company's umbrella, it's certain to cause concern for Strikefore and broadcast partners Showtime and CBS, who have relied (and will continue to rely) heavily on the two stars. Both are expected to figure prominently into Strikeforce's 2010 plans with Emelianenko likely to contend for the organization's heavyweight belt and Mousasi expected to defend his title, which he recently took from Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

Emelianenko, the longtime PRIDE champion, recently competed for Affliction Entertainment, where he defeated ex-UFC champs Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski. After its promotional demise, Emelianenko and the UFC entered talks that soon sparked a war of words in the media. White said the fighter's demands (which included the caveat that Emelianenko's UFC fights must be co-promoted by M-1 Global) were outlandish, but he said he was willing to pay big for the fighter. (Finkelstein, though, later denied reports that the UFC had offered a contract worth $30 million.) However, the co-promoting demands eventually halted the negotiations.

The talks temporary broke down in July, and Emelianenko signed with Strikeforce the next month. The promotion then announced a network-TV deal with CBS, and Emelianenko headlined the first show with a knockout victory over Brett Rogers in November.

Emelianenko (31-1) and Mousasi (28-2-1) are both expected to fight again for Strikeforce in the spring.

^Honestly I don't think Fedor will ever be signed into the UFC as long as he keeps demanding co-promotion with M1 global, I can't imagine Dana White ever backing down to that. They are more than happy to pay him a shit ton of money but that kind of co-promotion will never happen. I wish it would happen though, would be nice to see Fedor up against UFC talent before he retires. Fedor fighting Werdum for the title is kind of a joke, that guy is a serious step down from Rogers even. Considering how young Mousasi is though, I am much more optimistic that he will end up in the UFC one day before he retires.

Renegotiations are probably happening due to the fact that there's a good chance Lesnar may never fight again.

Whoa man, that Varner-Henderson fight was great! What a guillotine! Both fought extremely well, and Varner has been very congratulatory since...good sportsmanship. Anybody else see it?

I saw Brian Stann (former WEC LHW champion) and Rashad Evans at a DC sports bar on Saturday night. I was wondering what two UFC fighters were doing in the DC area, before remembering that the UFC has a Fight Night in Fairfax, Virginia, tonight. I successfully resisted the urge to go up to Evans and say, "I was not impressed by your performance at UFC 108" in a French-Canadian accent. [IMG]

Would have been better off doing your best Mr. T impersonation.

I wouldn't call his comments good sportsmanship, more like whining.

And I have to add that Sac has a really cute officer, anyone else notice?

Really? The ones I've read have been quite complimentary of Henderson.

In the post-fight interview, Varner acknowledged that Henderson was the better man that night, but then added, "I came to fight, while Ben came to grapple," or something along those lines.

Yeah, his post-post fight comments got worse, Varner is always kinda bitchy, he was trying to make it sound like Bendo was trying to avoid him in the fight or something. What that fight came down to was mental preparedness, in that Bendo kept calm while Varner had him in a choke (which was on and off for like a minute and a half till Herb Dean stood them out) and waited it out, while Varner tapped in 2 seconds. Honestly I am not very excited about Henderson being the belt holder, I thought Cerrone won his fight with Bendo, and I expect Cerrone to take that belt back soon. UFC fight night has been pretty good so far, but I think a certain filthy man was completely robbed!

    Dear Efrain Escudero,

Please tap a little quicker next time. Hanging on when you have no chance of escape makes you dumb, not tough.

    Sincerely,
    Your right arm

It's amazing how quickly I can go from favouring Henderson to thinking he's a total cunt after I catch wind of his religious affiliations in such a crass and unattractive manner.

    Good fight, though.
