The wife and I went to Gjelina in Venice last week for breakfast. We absolutely loved it. Will definitely be going back.

Yeah I love that place. Try Gjusta as well (same owners, although there's no where to really sit down).

That's by design. My understanding is that they have a permit that allows for a carry-away counter but not seating. They sort of fudge it with the milk crates and such in the courtyard.

I think they've been trying to get authorized for table service, but locals have been fighting it.

Gjusta is their place over on Sunset, near Rose in Venice, not the take away counter on Abbot Kinney. On that note, I'll second Gjusta, it's awesome. Get any of the smoked fish (on bagel or sammy bread), it's great. The seating is not that great as mentioned, it's just a little courtyard in the back and some standing room at a bar inside.

Yep, been there. Gjelina, Gjelina Take Away, and Gjusta are all great. I haven't been to Gjusta since moving out of Venice last fall, but at least at the time the sketchy seating in that patio area was in part because they were skirting their limited permit. As was noted, they were getting some neighborhood reistsmce to their pursuit of a full-seating restaurant permit.

Have any of you tried watching Will Arnett's new Netflix show Flaked? It takes place in & is all about Venice and seems to feature Gjelina prominently (I'm not 100% sure--I've never been to the place but a restaurant referred to as "GJ" is one of the settings). I wanted to enjoy the show if only for its setting but judging from its first episode, it's absolutely horrible.

Had a chance to stop by Magasin today at the new Platform in Culver City. Pretty cool store with some harder to find in-person brands (EG, TS(S), Camoshita).

I had no idea that was open already! Culver City is coming up.

Very nice... didn't know it was there. I was at the Blue Bottle there the other day.

There is a new retail development in Culver City called "Platform". From the information posted online, it is supposed to be a collection of shops (including men's shops) and restaurants that have unique items not available anywhere else. They had several "Grand Opening" events around a month ago.

As I was in that area today, I went to Platform around 11:00am to take a look. Many of the shops are still under construction. The few shops that were there did not appear to be open. (Lights off and doors closed.) There seem to be a lack of graphics indicating either the names of most of the shops or the hours that they might be open. I also could not find a directory showing the names and locations of the shops and restaurants. I might go back there in six months to see if there are more shops that are open and more graphics.

I swanned around Platform for around half an hour hoping to find something open and took some pictures........

There didn't seem to be any restaurants. There was a place that sold coffee and a place that sold ice cream cones ($5.00 and up) that were open. I didn't want coffee or $5.00 (and up) ice cream cone for lunch.

I walked across Washington Blvd and then walked a block east until I came to La Dijonaise and had a Turkey Sandwich that was $5.95. It was a very good $5.95 sandwich.

Query that will out me as being hopelessly out of touch: would living in Echo Park for the summer be pretty fun (for a late 30s dude and his girlfriend) or second-rate-Silverlake lame? When I was growing up, there was never any real reason to go to Echo Park; I haven't really spent much time there recently. FWIW, the sublet seems to be close to Sunset & Le Moyne.

Echo Park is great if you like the neighborhood. There are tons of new restaurants, bars, coffee shops, boutiques, etc. It's a great walking neighborhood too, and close to Elysian Park. But if Echo Park was your cup of tea, I feel like you'd know that already, so you should probably spend an afternoon or evening there yourself before deciding.

Hmm. Won't have time to fly to L.A. before I decide whether or not to sublet the place.

Eh, the worst case scenario is that I gain twenty pounds by eating old timey French (or French-ish) food every day at Taix.

I guess it depends in part on whether you think a first-rate Silverlake would be lame.
I think you'll enjoy it, though. It will, however be hot af (as LA goes) in mid to late summer.

I lived in Silverlake when I was younger. I lived on Vendome in the building that is behind me in this picture. Just to the right of the building (and not in the picture) are the stairs where Laurel and Hardy filmed "The Music Box" (the film where they tried to move a piano up the stairs).

That building was still there the last time that I looked.

Beach bro, I grew up in the Valley. As long as the temperature stays under 110 I'm good.

The wife and I went to Piccola Trattoria in Canyon Country last night. We had a lovely meal, the service was great, and the complimentary valet parking is nice. I highly suggest the Rigatoni con Salcissie e Tartufo Nero.
