I'm also a pretty easy fit as a 16.5/35. Simple to find excellent RTW shirts. MTM makes good sense for the reasons you listed.

I’ve tried $350 bespoke shirts and $150 MTM shirts. When I ordered a Spier & Mackay $80 MTM shirt last month, my mind was blown. It was on par if not better than the $350 bespoke shirt I got from a NY shirtmaker.

USA clothing factories just don’t have very good quality control. Lots of loose stitching/threads, etc. They just can’t compete with some of the overseas offerings.

I've been thinking about the pricing for tailored clothing (shirts, pants, suits, sport coats) moving forward and how the prices will keep increasing given the cost of living in industrialized countries. I'm not sure I can afford to keep funding my tailor given the constant price increases and the dollar to pound ratio.

Spier and Mackay is starting to look like a great deal given the silhouette they've been able to achieve on their tailored pieces.

Bench made trousers are questionable as well. I went through two pair of flannel trousers in a three year timespan. Trousers aren’t particularly hard to make and shouldn’t be that far off from the price of shirts. Tailors and factories probably don’t receive great margins on them and have to sell them as a luxury item.

I am sure it is nice. But chore coats are a dime a dozen and have even seen a bunch in ecru. $490 seems steep. Ymmv, of course.
