This may a be a weird question but I figured this may be the best place to ask, how do you all who live in the depths of suburbia wear longer coats like balmacaans? Even though I'm working downtown, my daily commute is from my garage to another garage. I never really step outside. It just seems like my bal although awesome, is a bit much to drive the 25 minutes into the city and then immediately take it off when I get into the office.

I thought to wear it to the park with the kids, but then I'm sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle of a sea of dads in Patagonia down sweaters... I guess I need to learn to care a little less.

I think it really depends on your personal commute and comfort level with outerwear. My commute is mostly in the car, no need for heavy outerwear when you can set the temp to 70... But, depending on where I can park, I might have a 1/4-/12 mile walk to office, so I bring plenty of layers with me.

If I was routinely going from garage to garage, and never having to leave the office for lunch or anything else, I would likely wear less outerwear.

"I guess I need to learn to care a little less."

It'll make you happier.

Sticking out is only bad if you stick out for looking stupid. If you stick out for looking good, who cares? There's no valor in conformity just for the sake of conformity.

if you love something, wear it. sounds like it may not be entirely practical for your daily commute but seems like it could really shine on the weekends. over a sweater, sweatshirt, or hoodie with some jeans and sneakers?

i really like the way josh peskowitz styled the drakes raglan coat here: https://www.drakes.com/editorial/raglan-coat-josh-peskowitz-interview/

This is not a weird question! Having moved to the suburbs in the last year I’ve come across this same conundrum with a drastically reduced need for outerwear, especially longer outerwear as you mention, since most things involve going from the car with a short walk to a conditioned space. It’s an adjustment for sure from city life and a little bit of a bummer for us enthusiasts. But I’ve got no problem rocking my KS Traveler for suburban errands, love throwing it on over a sweatshirt and jeans with some sneakers or boots. No shame having the coolest coat in Costco haha.

All great advice. Thanks all.

Agree, the way Josh Peskowitz is wearing that raglan coat is exactly the way I'd like to wear mine. I just need to get over this weird mental block I have about longer coats. I never reach for them when I'm heading out and they end up just sitting there until I sell them or give them away.

Having the best looking coat at Costco would make my Saturday ?

Maybe park your car at the end of the driveway instead of your garage? That way, you'll feel compelled to wear a warm coat on your (short) walk to your car since you'll be outdoors :)

I want to echo what some others have said and put my own spin on it. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have more or less rebuilt my entire wardrobe. I sold off or got rid of all of my truly slim-fit stuff that had any value and packed up the stuff that didn't (like Uniqlo stuff with very poor resale value). I made a deliberate decision to buy stuff I like and stop buying things because "they fill a need/hole in my wardrobe"--which tended to be inexpensive or on sale meh stuff. The issue I had was that my wardrobe ended up being filled with meh "filler" stuff that I ended up wearing that all the time in my day-to-day while "saving" my nice things for special occasions that by definition were rarer. The pandemic really magnified the issue because there simply were no more special occasions for a while.

Yes this has been costly and I partially justify it by acknowledging that I don't have many other hobbies (not into stuff like golf or skiing, not into watches or cars--I lease new models, but have been perfectly happy with my entry level '22 Civic the last few months). But maaaaan has it made it easier to pick out what to wear each morning, made me less likely to give an F what others might think, and made me wayyyyy happier every day. It's been revelatory.

A quick example: We did a park playdate the other day and I wore a very simple, basic DWW-suggested fit: light blue OCBD from Proper Cloth and a navy O'Connell's shetland, orSlow jeans, and some sot of boot (probably Indys) and a new Document jacket I really like from NMWA. Because the OCBD/Shetland fit more trad than slim, I'm not BSing when I say it was just as comfortable as a hoodie under a Patagonia down sweater. We video-chatted my mom after and she asked why I was dressed up, so there's that, but it was certainly appropriate for the weather and occasion, which is all that matters.

Great thoughts. I actually did this as well. I trimmed my wardrobe pretty significantly over the pandemic. Problem is that now that I'm not a fellow anymore and I finally have some disposable income, its ballooning up again, haha. I do agree though, wearing what makes me happy is what I should aim for. I pulled out my KS traveler the other morning and I felt like a million bucks.

if you're looking for a great sweat suit, i can't recommend the standard issue stuff enough. i have two from them and they are serious business. 24oz cotton. totally warm enough to wear outside on the coldest days. they have some really great colors too.

another data point: I am 6' 165# and have a large (orange) Frizmworks parka via AllBluesCo.

It is definitely slouchy/oversized on me, a medium would have worked, but with less room for layering.

I wanted something I could wear over a suit on absolutely miserable NYC days and not even need to think about what was under it. Any remotely nice day I wear a topcoat or balmacaan, so a "fitted" parka makes no sense to me . . .

A little late, but here's a pic:

I was just looking at these, they look dope. I wanted to get a set after Gorecki was on Throwing Fits but I never got around to it.

I can't believe I'm going to type this, but if there's a case to wear Balmacaan coats open all the time, this is it.

More airflow, not as warm, and you'll look dope.

I have some black side zip Buttero Floyds I bought a year or two ago and I wear them so much more than I thought I would. So much so that I picked up a brown suede pair recently in the same model.

Thanks for the recommendations and pointing me towards the sale - all of this talk of side zips has me returning to the Floyds as an option for the brown boots I've been looking for recently. I'm assuming the camel pair you purchased was the snuff/tobacco suede version? I'm wondering whether the snuff or that dark/chocolate brown suede would be a better option for a first pair. Anyone with experience with side zips have an opinion on that? I think the camel might go with more of my pants, but am still leaning towards the dark brown.

Also, I think I remember that the general recommendation was to size down on these. Does that still hold true? I'm typically a 44–44.5. Would I go 44 or be better off going all the way down to a 43. I know @OccultaVexillum takes a 44, and I believe he's a full size bigger than me in most footwear, so wondering whether the full size is necessary.

FWIW I’ve bought my Floyds from Yoox both for <$170-190 and I’ve seen them go for $150ish before - I just didn't want to risk them selling out in my size in the color I wanted. I’m an 8D and I went with a size 40 on all my Buttero.

I'm not sure which color I have, but here's a quick snap of the two:
