Thoughts on going bespoke for a balmacaan? I assume that there isn't much of a point since its meant to fit very loose, but interested to see what other people think.

Maybe if you're extremely particular for certain things it would be worth it, but I think money for bespoke would probably be spent better on other projects that benefit from a precise fit.

I ended up going this route, the cost for a bespoke Bal from my tailor was cheaper than most of these nice ones posted ITT. (I think this is the 15th time I've bragged about this)

There is still the benefits of being able to pick your own fabric and details, coat length, inside pocket details, lining etc.

Marling & Evans carries some really nice 720gsm coating fabrics for a very good price.

Anyone tried that Permanent Style bal? Looks pretty good.

i bought it last year. i like the cut through the body, just roomy enough but not too baggy for my personal taste. the sleeves are a bit narrow though, which is something that was addressed in this years iteration i believe.

I bought last years version, too, and really like it. I actually liked the slimmer sleeves as it modernizes the fit a bit, but YMMV. The collar on mine last year didn't stand up well but I'm pretty sure its because it was sitting in the down position for a time after production. Stored it with the collar up and it holds much better now.

The cashmere pockets are very nice but I do feel like they'll wear quickly. Might replace them with corduroy a la peacoat when they do wear out. Another minor thing: the flaps for the buttons used to keep the interior pockets shut sometimes poke me while being worn. I know how dumb that sounds but it does actually annoy me. I tuck them in and it alleviates most of the problem.

Those being my (minor) reservations, I'm otherwise very pleased with it and it got a lot of use last year in bay area winters and a trip to SLC. I understand this year's version is a little heavier, which may be better for colder locales. I try to keep a very streamlined wardrobe and the weight, color, and style make it an extremely versatile piece that I get a lot of use out of in a variety of situations.

I think these look pretty cool, and personally I think I have too many earthy colours at this point for a casual wardrobe and can use some more black. The closest I've gone is a black linen western shirt.

For me the issue becomes shoes. I wonder if dark brown suede shoes even work in outfits like the above. Part of me says yes because they're understated and fairly subtle.

I don't know... I think this anti-black thing is mostly internet propaganda. Nobody wanted to wear all black after the Great War, and since then it's been a kind of custom, but there's nothing wrong with some black pieces like trousers or jackets. The main thing is that they need to be absolutely perfect in fit.

I also like black suits with white chalkstripes - done properly, they're very British and still rebellious and sharp at the same time:

@dieworkwear Do you put the Lockie Chirnside as being any thicker than an O'Connell's or J Press shetland sweater?

My 2 cents: no thicker; thinner than shaggy dog. HOWEVER, much denser knit, much sturdier, and I'm pretty sure warmer.

Note: technically, I don't have a shaggy dog, but I have a brushed Shetland from Shetland Woollen Co. Assuming shaggy dogs are still made by Laurence Odie, both of these are made by the same factory. (O'Connell's is also made my Laurence Odie. Just check for an LOKL tag on the inside by the waist.) I recommend Shetland Woollen Co. You can get them from Northern Fells.
