I know Derek at least lives in a very HCOL area but both of these tweets seem wildly out-of-touch. The median salary for a full time worker is like $66k in the US

I imagine X being DWWs version of Valhalla, where he can fight all day and post about classic menswear all night. There's a never ending supply of people who need to know about collar gaps, and the alt-trolls keep getting back up to be snarked again.

giving the benefit of the doubt here but I suspect more like out-of-date . posting too many pics of Cary grant and Sammy Davis Jr might have warped his view of the US dollar

I think the flex is, “i make $80k a year while lying on my couch reading and occasionally feeding birds. Sucks to be you.”

I think the original post is supposed to garner credibility with susceptible people. "wow, this guy thinks $80k is chump change, he definitely knows what he is talking about and for sure is not just a grifter trying to alpha male/crypto bro/alt-right bullshit"

For D's sake, I truly hope he makes well more than that, or gets his cute little bespoke clothing comped :rotflmao:
Bespoke (at certain levels, anyway) is much more expensive than it used to be. English shoes and Savile Row suits, in particular, are outrageous - more especially because they no longer extend credit to their clients.

$80k, even in US dollars, is far too little for new bespoke commissions, unless you're prepared to live a lonely bachelor's life in a dingy flat and forgo decent food to afford it (particularly in L.A.). And even then it won't be from London.

This was always one of my biggest beefs with Derek here. He obviously had a lot of very nice things, but at the same time said he didn’t get things for free and was middle class. Something never quite computed.

It's entirely possible he was slightly misrepresenting his finances and is actually very well to do, is piss poor with money (i.e. mucho CC debt) or comes from some level of familial wealth...or perhaps is just lying about his wardrobe/its contents.

But, ya, barring additional context, he certainly is not living in SF proper and having a closet full of very pricey bespoke goodies on something like a $90k salary. Nobody is...

But, purely speculation. Would be an interesting rabbit hole to perhaps dive down if anyone was autistic enough to pursue lol

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about. I live in a nearby town with a col at least as high as SF and could easily live pretty well as a single guy on $90k.

Not for nothing, I'm fairly middle class and have some nice bespoke things. Not Savile Row level and not as many as Derek, but I imagine if I didn't have a family/mortgage and prices were rolled back 15 years or so, I could have probably swung it if I planned well enough.

Also, I think if clothing is one of your sole hobbies as opposed to just a wardrobe then its easy to throw a bit more money at it. I know decidedly middle class people who spend some serious coin on pricey hobbies like hunting/fishing, cars, travel, etc.

Yes it’s certainly possible. I just remember him talking about having multiple pairs of $1000+ shoes he’d never worn. Multiple $5k+ Hermes portfolios. Etc.

And then there was the time he said nobody should buy bespoke if they made less than “mid 6 figures”

Derek could possibly be a very smooth, shoplifter...

There may be some truth to that statement. Bespoke can go wrong in so many ways and it takes a few commissions to figure out your wants/needs. It's easier to weather that storm in the mid 6 figures.....
