Southern Europe grows lots of herbs, and you’re right those are seasonings, but fewer and fewer of those as you go north. Not sure how much the Germanic tribes would have had to work with.

Didnt Apicius have access to imported spices from India and elsewhere that wouldn’t be available for another thousand years once the trade routes were disrupted?
Spices mentioned in Libellus de arte coquinaria - 13th-16th c.:
pepper, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, saffron, sugar, cinnamon, anise, caraway, mustard, rosewater, cardamom, cumin, fennel

Hundreds of medieval cookbooks to peruse:

What beef are you talking about between DWW and laguy?

what ? no dww and cube .

I was saying styleforum and forum culture generally b/c I think it would make for a hilarious convo . I just tagged laguy b/c there's not really a good styfo tag otherwise , he's like mainline afaik .

I wasn't saying beef with styfo . separate topics .

Great article Derek- always a great read and pic inspiration! ...and timely, as I'm debating a lollipop as we speak for an alternate winter coat. While I love my DBF Grandad (ebony undyed) and all the verve it has- I'm more likely to be coercing kids into the car seats than strolling down Main St. for any extended period and would like something a bit more user friendly for Dad/car life.

So far, the LEJ Shell Blouson in the hearty 800gsm wool seems to fit the bill the best. The cropped length and double zip makes it easier in the car, the oversized "top block" and cinched waist cord allow for that rounded profile, and the weight make it good enough for quick jaunts. Any thoughts? My main hesitance is it's too cropped as I'm quite tall, and the cinch is a bit too visible (I know that's the intent, I'm just much more boring than that).

Most other blousons (ie Stoffa or Valstar) don't seem quite robust enough or are more technical in nature (already have Arc'teryx/Patagonia down stuff for when function matters most). I do like some of your choices in this category but for one reason or another go back to the LEJ. PS: Also love the KS Traveler having tried on at NMWA, if I needed a 3rd true winter coat that would be it.

Tyler Cowen of Marginal Revolution mentioned Derek's $500 tweet thread. Some commenters miss the mark though...

maybe @Shirtmaven would know...I think I recall him saying that there's only a few factories that do the MiUSA OCBDs, one of which is in NJ
New England shirt in fall river, MA.
They have been making there for a long time

Visible Pick Stitching on Lapels and Pockets

  • It’s a mark of quality and craftsmanship

  • I like it when it’s subtle

  • I don’t like visible stitching

  • Doesn’t matter to me
