Ignoring the reality that clothes can be styled however you want to achieve whatever image you want to project, it is undeniable that Hedi and his team have been making a concerted effort to position Celine as a sophisticated classy luxury brand. This sophistication and class was designed to elevate this brand above Saint Laurent. Case in point would be Hedi collaborating with a classical violin musician, Daniel Lozakovich.

I cannot imagine Hedi's Saint Laurent collaborating with a classical violinist, but it all makes sense to me at Celine. Although the Jacnos were presented on the runway with cropped pants, seeing it worn with pants that have some stacking is not bad either. Ss19 and fw19 definitely are my favourite seasons. Even if it is all arbitrary and bullshit, classical music is the fanciest music genre. This was back in November 2019. I'm not surprised people were so shocked at ss21. To me, it makes sense for 2019 to focus on a more sophisticated approach to build some groundwork on what the Celine brand is, before using this reputation to sell more casual pieces that people actually want to buy. They want the feeling of French sophistication without necessarily wearing dressy pieces. If they started with ss21 for the first season, I can see it doing more harm than good.

Although clothes can be styled however you want, the webstore has taken the liberty to provide some guidelines and suggestions on their Essentiels page.

I can see, from how the webstore sorted fragrance with outfits, a ranking of the fragrances in terms of casual to formal:
  1. Reptile (bad boy)
  2. Eau de Californie (casual laid-back)
  3. Parade (casual chic)
  4. Black Tie (formal)

Cool assessment and breakdown. Regarding the “bad boy” look, I would have thought Nightclubbing would fit in perfectly due to the scent of cigarettes/nicotine which is kind of part of the stereotypical bad boy image. You’re also spot on with the Black Tie as a scent for “tailoring”.

I was actually just copy pasting from the webstore's curated looks for the Celine Essentiels page, so none of this is my own personal creativity. Upon more reflection, I would say these are just rough guidelines. I feel like a lot of the scents have the flexibility to be used in different outfits. Reptile was worn pretty much for all looks on runway, apparently. I think it goes back to how people, me included, like for things to be put into neat little categories as we process new information or else it gets overwhelming. It makes sense that Nightclubbing would be "bad boy" as well.

I do wonder who decides on what gets to be part of the web store's Celine Essentiels, and why those 4 scents were specifically picked to be part of it. I find it weird that the webstore doesn't have a Celine Essentiels collection for women. But all in all, as nice as there are "rules" present, I do think there is freedom for one to experiment and have their own creativity when constructing their look. I think it is one of those situations where one could "learn the rules before breaking them".

Although the women's section don't have Dancing Kid, they do have ss21 Part 1:

The jeans and sneakers look so nice on her.

If I were to style my own Celine bad boy look, I think it would be heavily inspired by Andy Warhol:

I could imagine a couple of fragrances working: Eau de Californie, Reptile, Nightclubbing, Parade, and Black Tie. Each different fragrance slightly twisting the look every slightly, giving the look a different shade and nuance.

Reptile and Nightclubbing makes the most sense for this look. If my entire wardrobe burned down and I had to start from scratch, I would build my wardrobe around these 4 styles. These elements from Celine are what I gravitate towards, and it covers a nice range. Bad boy, laid back casual, dark academia, and dressy goth/vampire.

Looking at the new art installations at the Beijing store, Hedi is really deliberate in creating a theme.

Injecting this element of having art pieces play such a prominent role in the brand's image really hammers home the idea that Celine is going after a more sophisticated image. I'm not going to pretend to know what the art is about, but visually it looks nice as it fits Hedi's themes he uses for the stores. Interesting that they're opening a new store in Beijing while closing one in Milan.

Now with all that mention of sophistication and being classy, I still have a soft spot for girls in just cute looks that might not be classy or sophisticated. Ss21 vibes.
