Hey guys, is a double oiled waterlock leather sole going to be good for rain and snow?

    Beauties.

I would personally like them better on the Grant last. Can anyone tell me what the fascination is with the Barrie last, with its wide heel and blobby non-descript toe? Most of the designs from Alden, LS, Alden of Carmel etc would look so much better on something sleeker but the Barrie seems like the default last. The Grant is the perfect middle between sleek (Aberdeen/Hampton) and clunky (Barrie). IMHO of course!

Any particular reason why? I'm looking for some nicer boots to wear in the snow, and Alden is up there on my list. :)

Alden boots are $400 and up, and I would personally not want to ruin them, in my case, by wearing them through New York snow. The snow here gets dirty, there is salt all over the ground, and other things that would ultimately fuck up the boots. For truly bad days, I have a pair of katahdin boots.

Nah, I know exactly what you mean. The snow in Michigan can get pretty muddy and nasty as well.

I plan on picking up a pair of Bean Duck Boots for those really bad winter days. I just need a pair of nicer boots that will do well in a small amount of snow and rain. I don't plan on doing physical activity in them or trudging through mounds of snow, you know? Just getting around campus.

I agree with you. I like the look of the Barrie but hate the fit. I think it's popular with retailers since nearly any foot shape will fit in it. They won't fit well, and are likely to have a shitty fit in the heel, but they will physically fit in the shoe. That seems to be enough for some people.

Any shoe on the Barrie would be improved by being on the Leydon or Grant.

I've never seen bad pics look so good. That makeup is spectacular! Enjoy wearing them, and I love how the Indy boot snuck into the picture.

Are these the colors that Alden offers in shell cordovan?

    Black
    #8
    Cigar
    Ravello
    Mahogany
    Whiskey

How do the the browns compare with each other? I'm an Alden noob, but I'm considering a pair of cordovan longwings at some point.

    There's also #4.

    L to R: cigar, whiskey, ravello, #4, #8.
I find Ravello to be my favorite.

Thanks a ton for that picture; it really is a good comparison of the colors!

I think my ideal pair would be a pair of cordovan longwings in cigar (I like that there's almost a green-ish tint to them in some lighting) or #4, but really, I don't think I could go wrong with any of the non-black colors. I'd also prefer something not in the Barrie last, but I don't know how feasible that is.
