This is a close call in my opinion but you have a ton of options. I had a pair with similar issues and talked to Alden. They offered to re-dye the shoes. I'm going to wait for recrafting and have it taken care of. Here are your options:

    1. Keep as-is and wait for recrafting. These spots will not look as significant with a bit of wear. Maybe they will fade into patina and you won't need a re-dye.
    2. Ask TSM for a discount. Some people on here will discourage this, but IMO these should be seconds and should be priced accordingly.
    3. TSM could potentially fix this. I had a similar issue with TSM and they offered to take the shoe from me to fix the issue in house. Not sure what they do but could be worth a shot.
    4. Return em - just be sure you dont crease em

Really don't understand how these boots could pass the QC. I am fine if the blotches and unevenness were near the heel or quarter. But that kind of defects on such noticeable areas are totally unacceptable for me. I will just send them back and wait for the next pair.

They are a 8th Year Anniversary for Tassels Hong Kong.

Everyone and their creases... I haven't cared for them at all yet.

Picked up a pair of 994's (Color 8 Saddles) on eBay from a great seller for only $99. The date code shows produced in probably 1992. They were in REALLY good shape. First, some before pics:

With the help of @mdubs advice/blog and a deer bone, Alden color 8 paste wax and black edge trim, I think they turned out really nice:

    All done!

I really like the burgundy/red shade. It's very much "old color 8". Not bad for $100 and some elbow grease!

Turns out they were made for a shop called Terry & Juden Co. in New Orleans that was in business from 1885 through sometime in the 90's or 2000's. They also have some other really cool vintage menswear.

Those Color 8 saddles are great - nice job on them too!

You're clearly a much better home for them...

Thanks guys! Was debating going antique edge, but they're so light red I think the black trim is a better contrast.

    What does everyone think?

I always think black looks best with burgundy! ;)

Some part of me thinks that the pairing of dark uppers with light edge trim is a fashiony trend that will eventually pass.

Dark burgundy with black edging is classic and will never go out of style.

Just depends what you're going for. Antique will give it a slightly flashier/casual look, black will be more traditional formal.

Does anyone know if there is a version of the 990 made with an antique edge? This is further complicated by needing an E width (10.5E is my best guess Barrie size). The Leffot dover is very attractive but I'm not sure when they'll be doing it again, and I think I actually prefer the PTB pattern anyways.

    Cheers

Only D width though. Are you sure you need an E in Barrie? Sounds like you've never tried one. Look at their return policy and try the 10.5 they have in stock.

Thanks fellas! I think I'll keep the black edge trim. I appreciate your input.

    Happy holidays!

Thanks for the info! I hadn't seen those before and they look great.

You are right about me being uncertain, but mostly in the sense that I'm not positive E will be wide enough. I've tried on a 10.5 (and 11) D width and they were not. I mostly need the width around the midfoot/waist of the shoe - 10.5D _might_ eventually work for a leather that could stretch, but the shell PTB's I tried were too tight. For reference, my AE sizing is 10.5EEE in 5 and 1 lasts.

    Thanks Chris.

    Your Saddles came out terrifically.

I suggest that you leave them black edged for now, especially since you just cleaned up their edges. You can always convert them later if you think they need to be spiced up some.
